They are back in WSB with Mark Atchinson as the rider. Somehow they have been given permission to race the 1198R as apposed to the Panigale.

Will be very interesting indeed!! Could ( I hope not ) this have the potential to make the Panigale blush now and again? Nah, don't think Ducati would allow this to happen as WSB is all about win races on the Sunday sell bikes on the Monday.

It is on the MCN.COM/sport website, apologies as I can't work out how to do links on my iPhone .

There was a blurb sometime back about Ducati re-homologating the 1198. Basically, it was a matter of there being a good bit of competitive kit still around that could be put under good riders, no doubt for a lot less money than a new, relatively un-sorted Panigale.

Thing to remember is that while the Panigale might have a lot more performance in the trim we can buy it than the 1198 (more power, lots lighter, etc.), in WSBK trim there's not a lot in it, if any, due to the regs. If you had put Checa on the grid at PI this year on an 1198 without weight penalty and no intake restrictors, he'd have had a really solid shot at the win, likely better than the 1st time out on the new bike.
