G'day guys,

The engine in my 1199 has cut out mid ride on me 3 times in the last two rides!!

I've been in the higher gears doing about 100-140km/h when it shuts down. The mode numbers dash out, check engine light comes on and the engine warning is displayed on the dash. At a stop, back in neutral it will crank but won't fire. Turn the key off for a couple of minutes and back on again, the mode numbers display and she fires right up without any issues.

Todays ride it first did it after 39kms and the second time at 130kms.

It's still under warranty and I'm going to ring a dealer tomorrow but I'm interested in why...

Anyone had this happen or have any clues as to why?

Is there a diagnostic mode/error codes we can access via the dash?

Cheers,

do you have a piggyback fuel module?

Negative.

Took it up to dealer today and plugged it in. It's logging a LAN bus fail on the BBS and the main ECU. I've got it on the bench now at home checking the battery terminals and the common earth point behind (apparently the bike is quite fussy with respect to those points being bonded good). If it fails once I clean them it'll be off to the shop for wiring checks etc.

Wow that's odd but I think your now closing in on the problem
Bad terminal connection, a short or grounding
Did you check your cylinder coils or plugs ?

Not yet, it's not breaking down under any specific load etc, very random and just kills the engine! I asked what they would like me to check and the mechanic suggested those couple of things then bring it in considering it's still covered under warranty.

with the fault codes it logged he sure it's either grounds, loom short or a bad ecu....

Bikes going to Desmo HQ tomorrow, hopefully it's a quick turn around!

The BBS module is notorious for going out, especially if you have the full termi system and it is not properly shielded.

It is the module wrapped in rubber under the seat.

Thanks, yes we've been talking about that today...strange that some of the functions it provides would kill the engine though...dunno

Bikes only got slips and the original heat shields are in place....and it's winter here!!

Evidently the Panigale's are ripe with electrical issues. Mine dies on me from time to time (usually when stopped and it also has had the throttle stay on for about a half second after I shut it off for a turn and then suddenly cuts off. Very disconcerting. This bike has its issues but is still fun (when it is running well).

The dealer is trying hard to get it corrected and has a representative from Ducati coming to check it out next week..*It never throws any codes when hooked up to an analyzer. Weird... but unless they just start replacing stuff to figure it out it will probably not get fixed. Personally I believe it is a ECU or programming defect.

Lots of weird issues from various owners on this site.

At this point in time, I doubt I will keep this particular bike long term Afteroit is out of warranty it will be damned expensive to keep running right.

Getting a bit disillusioned with the 1299 S It is just not what I expected. The articles I have read all describe it as being an awesome beast that wheelies all the time etc. Well I ride mine in the race mode with the wheelie control off and it is just not the beast they describe. I just purchased a new Rapid Bike Racing module to see it it will help.

It handles like a dream but just doesn't run like I expected
My old 2011 ZX 10r would kick its ... on the straightaway at the track.

Bummed at this point:(

Maybe the new BMW S 1000r next !! The fully loaded model with everything you can get on it is still $6000 cheaper. lots of upgrade money

I figure with the Akropovic slip on's and a few other additions I have over $30K invested in this bike (not counting the taxes etc.) Truly ridiculous and aggravating to have this much wrong with a brand new bike from day one.

OK Just venting

I've done 12000kms in 11 months and this is the first time it's played up so I'm ok with the bike. I'm just hoping now this will be rectified easily (hassle free) from a Ducati AU POV.

You mean un the few months you have been here?

These bikes have had great reliability over the years ive been here. And I don't know what your talking about.

Most of us are out beating on ours racking up the miles, with smiles.

And if you have a problem with 200HP its personal, not the bike.

These bikes are not perfect, none are, all bikes have some sort of issue one way or another. There not for everybody.

That was my point! Maybe YOUR bike is running well, YOUR bike may be reliable, YOUR bike might be great.
Well.... Mine runs like .... most of the time and certainly not up to its potential..Certainly not the way a $25K + bike should run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had a LOT of patience with it.. I have had it in the shop virtually every week trying to get it resolved. The dealer is GREAT They are trying hard.. However the actual manufacturer DUCATI, doesn't seem to have wanted to even admit there was a problem until now. After 4 months of this BS they are finally going to send a guy out to ride it and try to fix it. Well Hoo-Ray!
BTW.. Maybe your bike is putting out 200 hp..Mine is definitely NOT putting out anywhere near that..! I have had it on a Dyno twice.. It's max was 173 on a cool morning.. much worse when it warmed up.. Its AFR is all over the place It runs REAL lean on the low to midrange Then real rich on the upper level. (I have 600cc bikes pull on me out of the corners at COTA..) I KNOW how to ride, I ride in the expert level and have for years. I KNOW when a bike is running correctly..
Maybe you and others have had a great experience with their bikes. I have not That is what this forum is all about right.. to be able to talk about our bikes and compare notes.. Maybe ask for help or advice...
Well evidently when someone gets on it and expressed a disdain for their bike becaseu of problems they are having over and over, you get your panties in a wad and feel like you need to chastise them for not being happy... Who made you the king of the forum?
Ducati doesn't give you much in the way of options when trying to upgrade or modify their bikes.. I had to pay the absolutely RIICULOUS sum of another $3500.00 for Akropovic slipo'ns with the 1299 UP Map just in desperation.. trying to solve the issues..NO REAL IMPROVEMENT.
Maybe it is just my bike.. probably is.. I am not knocking all the Duicati's I have always wanted a Ducati, I even wore the shirts for sevferal years before I purchased one.. I hung around the dealer here in Austin on and off just drooling over the new Panigale. I finally went for it and no I am just not happy... I am just pissed off that after all this and the extra money I have spent it is a dog compared to my old ZX10. At least on the track. I am 61 years old and have ridden fast bikes for many years. (Probably many more years than YOU have been riding)... I am a performance oriented rider and I am NOT happy to just "cruise around" or tour about town and be happy with my bike when it is not running the way it should.
Maybe you and others are? I am not.....When I spend the money I spent I DEMAND it run correctly. If I cannot get it right( or at the very least running in a SAFE manner) I am going to start raising hell with Ducati (the factory)

Answer me this....? Does YOUR bike have the throttle stick on and STAY revved up to 3000 rpm for about a half second after you chopped the throttle in a corner (and then suddenly drop back down in the middle of the turn?) Would that bother you if it did? Well mine does....
Does YOUR bike cut off and die on you often, sometimes in the middle of an intersection with cars coming at you? Would that BOTHER YOU if it did? IF not then you don't know what I have gone through. So STFU....!

I'm sorry to hear about your bike issues. No doubt these bikes are temperamental and we all have had our share of issues with them. I have been through 5 Ducatis before my 1199S Tri
and they all gave me problems, so far this bike hasn't. I really hope they fix your issues and give you the bike you were meant to have, that said, the RapidBike "race" module totally transformed my and other's bikes on this forum, hopefully it will do the same to yours.

Please keep us updated...

ps- i'm really liking that new Aprilia RSV4 RF as my next purchase..

Thanks for your understanding about my rant.. :( I guess I just needed to let off some steam once in a while.
I can't complain to my wife much or else I hear the "Why did you spend so much money on a bike" speech... LOL

Yep. As far as the new Aprilia goes.. I wanted one of those also but I look absolutely ridiculous on one I'm 6'5'' 225..lbs I look like a big skinny monkey humping a football on it. LOL I look like than on pretty much any other sport bike (**See avatar picture of me on my ZX 10 track bike) but the Aprilia is even worse LOL. It is about the smallest bike out there.. It literally looks like I am riding a minibike..!

Hi dude

I've just got rid of my factory Rsv4 as I had problems after problems and still the dealership couldn't fix it even so Aprilia came out to investigate the bike and 4 months of garage to home to garage I sold it for a Panigale which so far not having any issues. However I wish I had kept my Jap bike ZX10r 2012 as Jap bikes are so reliable.

Good luck on getting through this as it does get you down

Mine died today with zero warning. Was running smooth and perfect before just cutting off. No issues before at all like this this. Very frustrating.

Mods:

Rapid Bike Module

Front Exit Termi Slip-Ons

Flapper Vale delete w/ Exhaust Servo Eliminator

Symptoms:

Starter Button has zero effect

ABS Lights up on the dash

Engine Light is on

Can't hear fuel pump

Possible Remedy:

Disconnect RB Module

Check under tank for fuel pump.

Have dealer pick-up for repair?

Like I said earlier. Lots, of electrical issues. Maybe they could hire away some Japanese engineers to learn how to make reliable trouble free bikes like my old 2011 ZX10R.
I am starting to really miss the ZX10. I absolutely caned it just about every time I rode it (last four years on the track exclusively) and never had a single issue with it.. However it was just not a ‎Ducati. The ‎Ducati has been a dream for a long time and I just got disillusioned. I apologize for being a whiner. I am hoping I don't end up with a $30k+ investment in an exotic turd! :(
