I finally slung a leg over the V4 this weekend and I know there have been many comparisons but opinions are like, well you know how the saying goes.

From what I can tell the 1299 Panigale has three main flaws:

1) Heat
2) Vibration
3) Seat

1) The problem with the heat on the 1299 Panigale is that seriously hot air blows on the back of my thighs even while at highway speed. That hot ... air needs to be re-routed some how somewhere. At some point I'm going to figure it out. For now I just deal with it.

The V4
there is no more heat blowing on your thighs at speed. Some heat did blow on my ankles but I'm talking the V4 is 80 to 90 percent better than the 1299. It was a welcome change.

2) Vibration - if you have read any of my previous post you know I hate it. Have you ever put your hand on the rear cowl while riding. OMG. The vibs through the bars are not high frequency vibs like you find on a inline 4, the 1299 is much slower but more pronounced. I'm starting to get used to it, but I've changed the grips, added heavy barends and a truss bar and things are much much better for me. If the 1299 vibration does not bother you the good for you or get a 959.

The V4
is significantly smoother. I'm talking 70 to 80% smoother than my 1299. I suspect I could ride the V4 without modification, it's that much smoother. You still feel the engine, it's just better.

3) The stock seat on the 1299 is atrocious. It might be suitable for the track, but any kind is street riding will have your ... crying for mercy. Aside from being brick hard it's slippery. On the gas or brakes and you will move around. There is another post about the difference between the race seat and comfort seat. Whoever wrote that said the comfort seat was as slippery as the stock seat and a race seat, which you will not side was better. I can attest that on my new comfort seat, it is softer and I do not slide. No more sore ... after an hours worth of riding.

The V4,
the seat is wider and more comfortable. You do not slide like the stock 1299 seat. It was a welcome change. Also, the seating position on the V4 is much more in than on top of the bike. It's wider and easier to grip the tank with your legs. I grip the tank with my knees and on the V4 you grip with more with your thighs. The V4's pegs are much higher, and this combination of knees up, wider and gripping with more of my thighs was easier than my 1299. I've been considering some rearsets and I thought I'd be lowering the pegs a touch but I think I'd like them to be higher. I certainly would like the opportunity for some adjustment. Perhaps BMW will make adjustable rearsets and bars standard and others will follow. Lol

Other noticeable differences.

The quick shifter
The 1299 can be a bit clunky especially going down. The V4 was very smooth. The bike didn't clunk or jerk.

Now the things the V4 do not do as well as the 1299.

I can only think of one!

My 1299 changes directions very easily. It's amazing how little effort is needed. The V4 was a little slower to lean. Counter rotating crank or not, it's just slower.

If you can think of others things the 1299 does better than he V4 I'd like to hear them. After my ride I confirmed I will be back on a V4 for my next bike. Will it be a Ducati or back to Aprilia, who knows. Living in Detroit means a lot of time crushing before you get to good back roads, so I would like cruise control, heated grips, AND, tire temperature gauge. I will not buy another BMW to get CC and heated grips, so it would be nice if Ducati or Aprilia offers all three or at least 2 of 3. Since these are race bikes I doubt they will do it, but I can wish. Aprilia has CC, but I would not say it's in the lead.

Agreed the V4 felt like it turned in slower than the previous bike but it did gain stability .

AmpForE - How tall or short are you? asking because I felt more 'in' the bike on my 1299S than the V4(on top). I'm 5'8'' with long arms and legs. I ordered my V4(waiting on delivery) and asked them to install some ProGrips for more comfort.
I live in STL, MO now. Originally from Detroit (West Side - Evergreen & GrandRiver) so I know how it is riding on those Detroit Roads. I'll be back in town in August to see my mom, but not bringing my Pani.

You can raise or lower the fork tubes in the triple clamp if you want to alter your turn in, and/or adjust rear ride height. Typically on regular forks, adjusting the preload sort of does the same thing. On the S models with electronic suspension I’m not sure fork preload can be adjusted. I would like to get my 1299s to turn in a bit quicker like the RC8Rs I had.

We are same height and build. The grips should help. If I were buying a V4 I would install motivation heavy barends to kill that last bit of vibration. I'm partial to Driven Grippy grips but just about anything is an upgrade. Stock grips are quite thin.

I live downtown, for now, so it's an hour an hour to the good roads, and they are rough roads. Hit me up when in town.

Fork preload can be adjusted, you just have to unplug the fork leads. I seriously need mine done. It's probably not that bad though, but it needs to be done, front and rear.

I think the 1299S is probably a bit twitchy at lean. I haven't had mine at the track yet so not been at a full lean yet. Perhaps this year but I am buying a house and I just cancelled my trip to the dragon while on my way to Mytle Beach, because I'm buying a house. So hopefully I will get to the track next year.

The electronics on the V4 are in another level, also de power delivery on the V4 is a lot smother and consistent.

Have you been able to compare your lap times to your old R race bikes or does it feel faster ?

cheers

Not yet . Still waiting for a rear shock and race glass then can start having a go at it but for a out the box bike it's really good .
I am having exhaust done this week and will head to Mac Park this weekend which I know well so will be able to get a better comparison .
One thing for sure it's fast .

Forgot about that one more thing. The Quick Shifter up and down were noticeably smoother, especially down.

There is a new S1000RR coming next year, I bet you will be tempted

I never noticed significant vibration on my 1299 and the quick shifter is ultra slick - then again I change the oil fanatically and only use Castrol Power One 10W-50

All the talk about "smooth this or that" still doesn't move me, the 1299 has stump pulling torque and that's why I ride it, I can't see going back to the a screaming four on the street, even though I loved the old S1000RR and ZX-10R at that time.

On track I have no doubt the V-4 is better and faster, but the 1299 is a peerless streetbike. The heat doesn't bother me as long as I'm moving. Keep the radiator FULL, that helps a little

No Sir, I will NOT be tempted. The others will follow BMW's lead if they add these features.

I owned a 2010 BMW S1000RR (Purchased May of 2010) and it literally put my hand asleep in 15 minutes.

After that bike I swore off inline 4's. Perhaps it's just me, but when I bought the RSV4 after it was the best decision I had ever made. Was it slower, yup! But it was smooth and even carrying the extra 10-15 pounds, it turned better than the BMW.

The motorcycle industry shrank for a reason, innovation was stagnate. Prior to BMW, sportbike riders would not buy a bike with ABS, despite all the data that said it saved people from crashing, especially the average to novice rider. The 09 CBR1000RR was an abject failure.

My next motorcycle will be a V4 period. If Ducati will not add the newer features Aprilia will.

You seem extremely sensitive to vibration. I've ridden inline 4s for over 30 years and never noticed it (significantly) with any of them, aside from maybe the 1986 GSXR1100 (still an icon in my book, the first true race replica street bike). Oh, and to the people who ..... about the heat on the 1299, go ride that bike!

Want smooth? Ride in a Tesla (or maybe a rotary), this is motorcycling, I love the feeling of a motor alive. The 1299 is a BEAST

Torque is a function of displacement. The V4 is still 1100cc, it will still have plenty of torque.

Worst handlebar vibes I've had was on a 2010 mv agusta f4. These little micro vibes that made your hand numb in 10 min...made me hate that bike.

I've read about the MV. When the shootout riders complain about vibration you know it's a problem. Lol.

I've driven quit a few of the electric offerings and damn it's a SMOOTH ... ride, but let's be serious here, it's a car. A flat 6 engine that sits behind you is pretty smooth too.

Everybody has their own tolerance level for vibration. Mine is low and yours is high. The S1000RR was probably the worst I've owned followed by the Panigale. The difference between the two is the Panigale is harder to kill. The S1000RR was actually quite smooth at 10k RPM and above, but who the hell is up there all the time on the street? Lol The V4 is the right choice for me. I tried the 1299 because I really do like it, I'm just not quite that comfortable on it yet. The comfort seat I added 4 weeks ago was a huge leap forward. I put 1000 miles on the stock and race seat and my ... paid for it.

I'm considering some rearsets. The V4 pegs were noticeably higher and I liked it. I'm on my balls of my feet on the 1299 to raise my knees for grip, hence, adjustable rearsets will likely help with comfort.

Any suggestions as to which ones have the most range of adjustment? I kinda like the Gilles VCR38GT's because of the range of motion. But I know the woodcrafts are probably the most practical.
