First Service

Kingsport Cycles

I say "shop", but that is my local dealership.

My true "shop" where my bikes are built/race prepped/tuned/etc is Livengood Motorsports (one of my sponsors). I have no idea what his normal labor rate is.

Those of you who do first service yourself, how do you reset the service light?

On the RSV4, the dealer AF1 simply emailed me the instructions/code to do it. It wasn't a big deal.

The dealers should provide that information. If not, then he is simply trying to withhold information for the sake of lining his pockets with your money.

YOU don't. Unless you have a pricey hand held to clear it.

$50 for my first oil change and chain adjustment.

Would never let a dealer touch my bike, less warranty work.

I have always thought they put that "service code" in there as nothing but a ....... money making scheme. They do that so you will HAVE to bring the bike to them and pay them $300-$400 for about $50 worth of work and parts.

It is nothing but a rip off.

I would want to know EXACTLY what they plan on doing for $300.

Oil = $30-$40 (retail)
Filter = $15 (retail)

I am sure they will charge you 1hr of labor, which will probably be $60 or so. So that takes you to $105-$115, including the hour or labor.

What else are they going to do? Adjust the chain? That is another 5min worth of work.

Personally, I have never had a dealership do a first service on any of my bikes. I do it myself. I actually do the first oil change at about 50 miles (hard break-in, where I stage RPM's up, utilize a lot of engine braking and perform a few oil/filter changes as I work my way up to 200 miles on the odometer, when I run it to redline).

Unless that first service comes with an oil/filter change, chain adjustment, new air filter and a new set of tires, there is no way they should be charging $300+.

this.

Buy case of oil online $40 If you're worried about keeping a track record go to the dealership buy oil filter there for $40. Or buy a K&N filter for $12....

Do oil change yourself.

$80 600 mile service.

I watched the dealership do the 600 mile service on my white 1199 and they did absolutely zero after changing the oil and charge me over $300.

The laws in other countries may be different between the laws in the United States it is illegal to deny warranty claims simply because a consumer does not bring a production vehicle into a shop for service.

This has been beaten to death.

I'd love to find a dealer who only charges $60/hr rate. Try double that. One of the many perks of living in Los Angeles.
Agreed.. Here in the SF Bay Area, our shops charge between $100 and $120 an hour as well...

^those are listed on ducati manual for the 1199 dds I think you can buy them from a dealer but I'm guessing they are very expensive(like maybe $3000.00).

the other option is the fast by ferracci kit which is $250 which (i think ) is basically cable and software to run on your laptop.

the thing I don't know is if the fbf kit is if the software is up to date with the newer models . to reset the service light is by far the most basic of functions .

a friend of mine has the basic kit and he reset his 1098 service light and track down electrical issues etc etc with it if that helps.

I've had a deposit on an R since December. As it's come closer to delivery time I asked about the first service. A few weeks ago when I asked it was, "about $350." Now that I have it in writing they're telling $396 plus $100 in parts. $496 plus tax for the 600 mile service. I called Ducati Omaha and asked about the same service, they quoted $229, no additional fee for parts. Then called MotoCorsa in Portland, they said $310. So I'm not paying $500 for an oil change.

No 2 dealer quotes will be the same. Hell, the same exact shop will even quote u different prices if u speak to different people. It's as if most of them pull prices out their ..... instead of having set prices for different services, minus parts of course. Another reasom why finding an awesome dealer is priceless.
