So it's time for a new set of chain and sprockets. The big question is, do I stick with the stock gearing of my 1199 or go to the R gearing of 15/41? I ride the two track here in Michigan (Gingerman and Grattan) but am hoping to hit up some new tracks this coming season. This past year was first full season of riding the track (I'd only done 1 track day before this year, needless to say I'm hooked), and I run in the intermediate group, faster 1/3 I'd say. Hoping to continue making improvements and getting faster next year.

Should I go 15/39 or 15/41?

R gearing no question first thing I did actually did it before the r came out

My question would be how was your gearing working for you on the tracks you're riding? Gear according to your tracks and needs. There's no such thing as a magic gearing number for everyone.

This.

-1 front was great for street riding and 70% of my local track, but with its long straight it was hitting the limiter. +2 rear in the back ending up prefect for the track.

On the longest straight I'm topping 5th gear, or just shifting into 6th before braking into turn 1, so it's not like I need the top speed that a 39 tooth would give me.

I don't know that I'm at a level where I can have a unique setup per track, maybe with another few seasons under my belt I can get to that point. Would the goal be to make use of each gear to the max? Maybe that's a dumb question.

There are a few situations where I'm kind of in-between gears, running out 2nd or 3rd to the brake point vs up shifting and then having to immediately go back down (if that makes sense). So maybe going to 15/41 would put me in a better gear/power for those situations. Appreciate the input.

Just have to play with it. For instance, on my last race bike, I turned faster lap times at my local track by gearing up so that I didn't have to use first anywhere, and never got into 6th anywhere as well. You just have to play with it. There are quite a few places where the Moto America teams don't use all of the gears in the gearbox. Then others where they need every one of them.

If it's only one corner where it seems to be in between gears I'd probably leave the gearing as is as once you start getting a better drive onto the straight, you'll be using more of 6th.

If it's at least 2 corners, I'd go ahead and try the 15/41.
