Display is changing into N or random gears but bike remains in gear all while jerking and surging. Check engine light is also on. Although is has a gear sensor warning light on us there anything else that comes along with this issue from anyone's past experience? How hard of a hit am I about to take?

Not bad. Gear sensor needs replacing. It's a sensor you can probably see at the rear part of the engine casing just inside the right rearset.
I think there is also a process for the ecu to relearn the gear after the sensor is changed our something like that. My dealer charged me 2 hours work and new sensor which is 100-200 bucks i think.

Mine does this occasionally too.

At the last service, they put it into relearn mode and it's been smoother and removed my false neutrals between 5th and 6th. However, a couple weeks ago I was riding along a country lane and looked down to see the engine light and the indicator showing -

After stopping and restarting the bike, all was fine again, but I suspect I'll need a new sensor at some point. It's done this twice in the 6 months (and 6000 miles) I've owned her

been reading on these issues. the gear sensor needs to be recalibrated or replaced. My big problem is in 1st and 2nd. The bike mechanically finds neutral but the ECU bounces back and forth between the gears and also causing some throttle issues. Also it only happens when the bike is brought up to temp and goes away once cold again.
My dealer said $50 if it just needs to be recalibrated or the part + 2 hours or so if it needs to be replaced.

Ok cool thanks guys, she just started acting up around 3300 miles

Lethalbizzle: yes, it started as intermitent issue on mine too. But after two months of daily riding, it became a lot more often (at one point it was always kicking up issue when temperature is between 40C and 55C).
Then not long after, it became permanent incurable, and that's when I brought it in for repair.
