Hey all,

Had the infamous gear position sensor failure on my V4S. Ordered replacement, replaced with (seemingly) no issues. Faults all went away, but now all my gears are off by +3. In 1st, shows 4th etc. 4th loops around and shows 1st.

Did some searching but can't seem to find anything on this - anyone have any ideas? Could it be something as simple as the sensor flipped to the wrong side on install?

You just need to do the gear re-learn procedure. You need the Ducati OBDstar device, Texa or the DDS tool the dealer uses to access it. In the OBDStar its listed as "gear reset."

The procedure for the xx99 bikes is outlined in the following link. I did it on my V4 and I think its largely the same. If it doesn't work you have to start all over. I don't think I got the flashing "C" but two hyphens which were flashing "--".

So, found out a few things LOL

The GPS definitely has a specific orientation. The +3 was due to having installed 180 degrees off (ie, wires come out the "top" of the sensor, which seemed counterintuitive to me). I figured that out through trial and error. Other configurations produced some weird results, like first showing as neutral.

More interestingly, when I took it off and tried various orientations I was back to having no gear number, just a dash and check engine light on. Even back to the original position where I had incorrect numbers showing now produced only a dash.

I hooked up my OBDII scanner and the code was GPS sensor low voltage. I reset/cleared the code, and viola - gear number came back and check engine light went out. Was still showing +3, so I rotated, and tried again. Got dash again, but after clearing codes, was back to a number that was finally correct.

It appears that with a code stored the ECU stops even trying to receive data from the sensor. Wonder if I could have gotten away without a replacement just by resetting the code? Ah well, now I have the high temperature version installed anyway.
I'll take it for a quick spin tomorrow and see what happens.

You can reset the codes without a device btw (if ever caught without it):

Start the bike, let it run until the fans start.
Turn the bike off, and wait for the fans to stop.
Repeat for three cycles, codes will be cleared.

I think that is illegal in California. ;) Thanks for the tip.
