I was at my track day in Fontana, CA this past weekend. Noticed fluid leaking from the the piston area on the rear brake caliper. Every time I pushed down on the rear bake pedal fluid would flow out of the rear caliper piston area.

I never use my rear brake on the track. My Pani is dedicated to track FYI. I think maybe I was dragging the rear brake, the caliper over heated, causing a seal to burst. The rear brake rotor looked a little scorched too.

My Question: Is my line of thinking correct, IE, the overheating, busted seal. Second question, how do I repair besides taking it in to the dealer.

it's possible you need to replace a seal in the caliper, I'm not sure if Brembo sell the kit's separately but there should be an aftermarket seal you can get.

I highly doubt this burst from braking at a track day it's probably corrosion of some form or just a seal failure.

i guess anything is possible, but you don't need to take it to the dealer.

there are a lot of places that sell seal kits for calipers, so just buy a new set of seals, maybe a new piston if the one you have is bad. Neither of these items are particularly expensive to replace

Possible sources of leaking:
1) (crimped) OEM (?) brake lines, very unusual. Never heard of such an issue
2) Loose bolts. Just retighten the Banjo bolt and the bleeder valve.
3) Caliper/pistons are leaking. Get a seal replacement kit from Brembo, clean everything and install it.

Something pretty common I see at the track is foot positioning being a little off on the pegs and sometimes people are riding duck footed with their foot on the rear brake lever. I'm not sure if you're new to the track or experience or not, but just something i've witnessed many times. The dragging either by foot application or sticking calipers would definitely cause overheating....is your fluid black, that is sometimes an indication of excessive heat.

Yea I think I was dragging. I've only been on the track 4 times, so I'm very noobish. My fluid was darkening, so I suspect foot dragging. I'll learn.

Thanks guys for the replies and info on the seal repair I'll look into it.

Makes sense it happens, no biggie, its an easy fix with new seals and fluid. Try to ride on the balls of your feet.

My first few track days an instructor scared me into being hyper aware of my foot positioning. He mentioned he saw someone "riding lazy" with heir heels near/on the pegs and when they were getting comfortable leaning and adding more lean angle that caused their foot to stick out at an angle. Their foot was dragging on the pavement and got knocked off the peg, wrapped around the peg and broke their ankle/leg something fierce.

I don't want to scare you, but that helped me A LOT to force myself to ride on the balls of my feet haha

Dam right! I've had a few times where I dragged my toes - quick and lucky reminder to get the dam lazy feet back up with toes on the pegs. Easier to move around the bike that way.

Not sure how much the kits are but calipers are all over ebay and rubbersideup for 100$. Sometimes easier to just swap it out.

What Tyler said. Just score a used caliper, bolt it on and then deal with trying to bleed all the f'in air out (which you'll have to do anyways).
