I'm trying to completely remove the tail section (not just the exterior body work).

Got all the bolts out, and it's loose, but the wiring is keeping me anchored. It seems to snake it's way up and through the plastic unit that houses the tail lights. Anyone know the proper way to get the wires out of the way and get this thing off? It looks like it's actually two pieces held together by clips - does it need to come apart in order to be removed entirely?

Thanks...

Which part of the tail you are removing? Do you want the tail to be separated from the rear sub-frame or as one unit? What are you trying to accomplish?

The wiring is very easy to remove.

Yeah I need everything detached from the subframe.

if you Remove the rear light unit, you will have better access to the wiring.

also if you weren't aware, you can order the dummy rear light separately if you didn't want the full kit

There are two main connectors under the seat that connect to the main harness, right under the support for the gas tank (the tube end). One connector is for the module (BBS?) right above the exhaust loop inside the sub-frame (this end of the harness that connects to the shock if you have an S) and the other is for the rear lights.

You should be able to disconnect that connector you identified from the light, I see you already have the connectors removed for the signal and license plate lights. The harness is probably tie-wrapped to the fuel tank support. Locate them, remove them, and you should be able to pull the harness out. You might have to remove the rubber piece inside the tail to get more wiggle room to pull the harness for the lights out.

Thanks...and to remove the lights themselves is just releasing the four clips?

I've got a full track fairing kit so I don't need dummy lights. Everything is coming off...race bike only from now forward.

single Phillips screw secures the light unit and unplug the Electrical connecter and the light unit and the under side cover will pull rearwards together.

if you can speak to your dealer there are 2 documents-

ISTR-693 Racing Tail guard kit
ISTR-692 Racing kit headlight fairing Kit

both are available as .PDF and have the instructions on the removal and fitting process
