High-pitched honk on start-up

'12 Tri. First cold start of the day (T in low 50's) I hit the starter and there's a very loud, embarrassing high-pitched honking noise. Stop...try again...same. If I hold the starter it does turn over and after bike is warm it doesn't happen. Bike sits 4 wks or so between track weekends. New oil, halfway between lines. Battery charged on Tender.

Any ideas?

Mine does it too. Do you know how to sort it? Does starter need to be replaced?

I was thinking starter. Wonder why it goes away after warm? Gonna look into how difficult starter swap is....

Probably the tolerances in there somewhere. Metal expands as it warms up.
