How much oil is your 15R using?

So I have no proof huh! Well.. MY bike was broken in according to the following procedures and mine doesn't burn any oil...! Neither does my other 2013 ZX14 or 2011 ZX10R (track bike that has been run hard since day one)

Here is a great article and some VISUAL proof.. Just scroll through it and look at pictures of pistons from the 'factory manual break in" This guy has rebuilt over 300 motors and he knows his stuff.. MUCH more that you do evidently..

Read it and learn...

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you .

Yeah, Well Said! and So true.. You just cant understand it for others.. LOL
That article is by an expert in motorcycle engine building and probably has Loads more experience than anyone else on this forum. I value his opinion (and direct experience)more than anyone on this forum..

Well as far as this and many other arguments go.. I give up.. I have spent countless time chiming in on different issues on this site. Sometimes, out of pure frustration, sometimes I am bitching about my bikes crappy running issues etc.. All I ever get is smart ... remarks and BS back
I am done..
You can all go on and on about this crap.... I just don't care anymore.. I would rather be out riding.. Life is too short to sit around the computer and type all day like many of you. YOu need to get a life...
... I have a great life Here in the Austin area in pretty good weather year round with a beautiful wife and lots of friends there is much more to life than this ..........

When it is all said and done " My dream bike" turned into a frigging pain the ....

After all the crap I went through, I think I finally got it running pretty good (after about another $1000 + in Rapid Bike Racing unit and Sprint Filter) and lots and lots of time in the shop over the last year.. Not to mention some really dangerous moments when it died on me in the center of an intersection and in traffic ( at least three times) etc..:eek::eek::eek:

If I could go back I would have never bought the damn thing.. It is sexy but just not worth the money and BS that goes along with it.
Kinda like some women I dated in the past. :D

I'm taking the wife on a cruise for two weeks soon to the Carribean..I am sure I will think about all you yankees living up there in the north in the cold and ice..:eek::eek::eek:
Some of you were really cool some not so much.. I wish you all the best..

That new 2016 ZX10R is looking mighty good.. I might just have to sell the Duc and get one..;)

Of course I will take a big loss when I do but at least I have it running well and it is now safe to ride..

Y'all all take care.. Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up..

You could have made a choice to get rid of it....Forums are for sharing information. Not everyone is going to agree with each other or we would have a "safe zone forum"

When I bought my 1299S with 1200 miles on the clock it was smoking like a turkish taxi with half a million miles on the clock! It had already had its first service at 600 miles. I dropped out the fully synthetic 15w/50 and put semi synthetic in the engine (same weight). Then thrashed the bike in the mountains, 350 miles in one day, dropped the oil out and put 15w50 fully synthetic back in the motor. The bike has since done 1500 miles more, no smoking on start up, no measurable oil consumed. I'me not going to lecture anybody on the science of glazing the bores you probably have all read out about it somewhere, but don't be too dismissive of what our pissed off friend is talking about.

PS hope you enjoy the cruise!!

Your bike is not a 2015R .

Just when I was gettin bored, my faith is restored in the forum. Just needed another speedy rant.

I agree with sexparty and Mutt1979, my 16' R with 2100 miles of street riding I have used approximately 2l of oil. I understood from the beginning that this is a homologated race motor so I expected "high" oil consumption.

interestingly when i did my fist oil change last week i noticed that the bike took more oil then my previous 13R. From memory my 13 would use 3.2l or thereabout whereas the 15R took around 3.7l,this included a filter change.

i change the oil frequently due to it being a track bike so i doubt i would notice it burning excess oil.

and did i mention how much a PITA it is to change the oil and filter on this bike it drives me nuts, such a .... design.

My 14R burned through at least 1L of oil in the first 2000 miles. Now it's got a leak on the front valve cover. I'm not sure what torque spec they are using at the factory or if this engine just vibrates .... loose. Taking it in this week for warranty work.

Just checked mine and in the last 2100kms majority of it in the hills or track days it's used, burnt whatever you want to call it 1.2L.

I know a couple of guys with the 13-14R's and I had the 14R myself and they didn't use this much oil, the last model used a bit but mine used about half what the new one does and I abused my last one, my new one has had a much easier life. Only know a couple of guys with the 15R's around here, we only have 3-4 in the whole state but they seem to be going through a lot as well. One of my mates his went through 2L in 1700kms. Which is quite a bit. Granted he did a few more track days than I did.

How much are yours chewing through?
Mine has used a quart (almost a liter) in 500 miles. Had its service done last saturday and I will report after 100 miles.

UPDATE:

Bike went in for 600 mile service. It came out great and unfortunately, after a few hundred miles, it is still burning oil. How much you say? Well, that's what I'm trying to figure out. At 530 miles (when the service was done) it was set right at the middle of the two lines. After two hundred miles (give or take), the oil level was at the minimum line. Today, after 300 miles, there's no oil in the window. Will go to dealer tomorrow to see what's what.

UPDATE 2:
Bike has now 1300 miles. It's using 500ml every 300 miles. Will contact Ducati regarding ring issues and perhaps have rings and pistons replaced.

I must say I did not check the level after the service was done on 800km, but I checked the window recently and noticed that it was halfway between marks, or just under. So I went looking for the shell ultra 4t 10w40 as specified by the manual. The dealer does not sell and the bike shops only have Castrol or Motul.
I then found the shell distributor and they sell shell advance atx7. They tell me this is the replacement for 4t and is the new one. They gave me a 15w50. I filled about 120ml on 3000km.
On all my previous bikes I never filled, but a constant level does not mean the motor is not using oil, it should, it just means that dirt and bypass fuel is making up the difference.

My responses are limited, you have to ask the right questions.

I bought my good old John Deere LX277 Kawasaki V Twin ride on lawn mower back in 2001. Put a hour meter on it and started cutting grass. I have 2.5 acres. Run mineral oil, whatever is cheapest at the supermarket. Changed oil and blades a couple of times over the past 15 years. Got a bit over 600 hours on her now. Cannot remember if there was a run in period. Developed an oil leak back in 2014 and I fixed that with some JB Weld. Still holding and saved removing the motor. It uses no oil.

The relevance of this post ? About as much as some of the others in this thread. I had a dollar for every time the run in technique for this bike comes up. No one ever agrees. Always two camps. And of course there is always people that know better how to run it in than the engineers that built it.

Where is ARSEHAMMER when you need him.

(or +10,000..depending how long you've been reading this stuff)

Same, my 2016 R about 1L 1000km. Dealer contact factory, and they said is normal. Specs are 500km/ 0.3 L ( now total km is 2000, maybe is going better after.. who knows..)

Don't start this .... again . It's not true you have no proof of that so why even post it .
You are comparing 4 IL bikes with a two ringed massive twin cylinder engine with light weight pistons .
Agreed! This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The two ring system on the 15&16 R's will cause the engine to go through a lot of oil. I add about .5 liters every week and I ride about 500 kilometers per week. Talked to DNA and they're aware of the oil consumption and have made notes on my bike.

You guys riding your '15/'16 R's hard...are you seeing blow-by into the airbox and coming out the drain tube, or is the oil you're going through being burned? I am told that ridden hard, you're going to get SOME blow-by and need to remove the tank regularly (daily at the track?) to clean the airbox (quick job, but kind-of a pain...but it's a race engine?).

this is a known issue/problem/defect - piston, piston rings & cylinder sleeve need replacement - 1 or both cylinders - mine was just 1 cylinder
