I bought a bike for my wife, 2012 Kawi 250. Low miles, tires look new practically. I'm just thinking ahead anticipating that she won't put thousands of miles on it, so other than wear do you think there's a time limit?

Not really. But you need to keep a eye on them still. Rubber will crack and dry up. Once that happens i do reccommend you swap them. But that may take 2 years and depends if you leave it out in the sun.

I usually keep 'em until there's no more rubber along the edges, then change 'em. ;)

In all seriousness, years is the correct answer. They'll be somewhat hard and slippery long before they begin to dry crack, but if they crack you'll know it's definitely time.

If she rides a measly thousand a year she'll probably wear 'em out before they die on time.

I have a honda 250 1994 with original tires. not a high performance bike so no real leaning on these non radials. No cracking at all though I don't know why

I am starting to notice the front on mine getting a bit old... It's had 11,000 miles on it ;) time for a change! Still the OEM front tire that came on it as far as I know. I don't think my dealer put a new one on.

you got 11k miles out of the front? WOW!

If it's for basic road use, not really. But there's no way in hell I'm using a 4 year old tire on the track.

-- just since no one has mentioned it - you can read the date the tire was made off the sidewall - there is a raised rubber stamp of numbers

-- 0110 means: made on first week of 2010 -- 01 = week 1 -- 10 = 2010

-- 4412 means: made 44th week of 2012

2 years. Rubber deteriorates over time. For me it is a safety issue, small contact patch and huge consequence.

Cool, I didn't realize that...
