Not wanting to inflame the senior members who have bashed me for tyrying to get to the bottom of the water leak issues.
Recently i tabled a document wherein the factory added a page to new models in the owners manual saying a small water leak is normal.
My dealer locally has agreed to replace my water pump but with no guarantee that it will cure the leak?
How many of you 1299 riders are having this small leak they admit is normal ?

Reason I ask I'm concerned that with the dealer striping back my bike to fit a new water pump am I not asking for more trouble? E.g.: oil leaks or other trouble going fwd?

What should I do leave it and embrace it or get it done? my warranty expired yesterday and I negotiated that they will do the repair early in February when I return back to SA

Now I'm wondering if I should let it be and just top up the expansion tank periodically

Serious non sarcastic advise would be most welcome

Just under 3k miles and fairly hard ridden. Never any leak. I'm meticulous with my post ride care so I definitely would have noticed.
If it's minimal and not requiring frequent coolant top ups I'd leave it.

Should not have an oil leak, coolant could happen on hot days or hard use. Mine has light spatter on trackdays, nothing on traffic use. Depends what type of seals are used really

Honestly mate, had a 899, 959, 1199, 1299 and now a 16 R. I did have oil leak with the 1199 oil covers covered under warranty. I don't think any type of water leak from a bike should be tolerated. Not safe. There shouldn't be any "safe" amount on a motorcycle. Some do leak unfortunately and I believe the dealer should cover it completely.

There is not denying that some leak coolant, and from various places. Both my Panigales suffered from a sort of coolant leak. My R got bad enough for me to do something about it as it showed up around the hoses, and occasionally from the weep hole. Funny thing is that the harder I ride, the less it leaked. At the end of the day, its your bike, and up to you to request fix if you don't think it is right. As they have clarified the weephole leak, I think that they should be willing to fix any leak beyond just a little seep from the weephole, during the warranty period, which is a scant 2 years from in service date. My extended warranty covers my water pump and radiator until mid 2020. This affords a level of comfort not to worry about the cooling system.

Where does it come from, where does the water go and how much water are we talking?

If your ducati ISNT leaking some sort of fluid you don’t own a ducati... take it to the shop so they can give it some “personality” and “character.”

I would not be happy with the dealer saying I have to accept a certain level of coolant leaking.
the motor and coolant system should be fluid leak free, if not it would be really hard to eliminate this from a potential cause of failure or a root cause for a accident or incident.

and therefor the following litigation etc..

I don't think this would be acceptable on the premium auto market either.

Got mine same day as you I think. Turned two on the 14th of December. 13 000km no leaks. The past couple of weeks have been bloody hot and I was stuck filtering long lanes of traffic, bike ran up to 104 degrees c often. No water leaks.
I personally would not be able to live with it, any drop on the engine casing or in the belly pan or on the floor will be unacceptable.

Ciao Capitano Greg ti consiglio si riparare la perdita di acqua per non avere problemi

I feel better now. Just got oil changed and now it's leaking!!
Time to take her back for a checkup:eek:

Exactly, I feel ducati added this "˜may have a slight leak' because of the amount of faulty water pumps and thermostat housing leaking.

Im on the same page as you, however the dealer has stepped up and said (after a bit of a tussle) they will replace the pump but cannot guarantee it will remedy the fault, this is a concern and as they now say they have this service release from the factory and it basically says it is ok to leak....

One thing that is on my mind now is do I invest into the new V4 simply because its a must have but knowing nothing abut its looming problems.
The 1199 - 1299 has been around for a number of years and now Ducati instead of engineering a water leak FIX simply add a page in the owners manual to say leaking is normal, all round I am just a bit uneasy with it

for those who dont speak his lingo

Hello Captain Greg I advise you to repair the loss of water for not having problems

Thank you Lucia and others I will take it in and hope for the best, will report back after its done, really hope I dont exp more trouble with it after such a major tear down and rebuild!

Who’s to say the V4 won’t have its problems, manufacturers deliberately make things break down to make money on parts and labour for stealerships/themselves.

There’s a few cars that have known HG and transmission problems and no there is no recall.

after spending the last 25+ years in the Engineering Maintenance sector, I would like to hear the technical need for a 'breather' on the water pump..
most motors will have a tell tail hole on the non water side of the pump to show seal failure and that the pump bearings are being contaminated with coolant.
it seems like the coolant system is over pressuring and pushing by the seal, but only at the extremity of the temperature operation, but I'm not an expert...

lets just say if my 1299 has an coolant or oil leak it will be sat at the dealers until its repaired, or the guarantee runs out (which ever is sooner ) ..!

Sounds like Ducat has good excuses for their issues...
Attached official answer about my flickering headlights....I afraid that manual will grow up quickly.IMG_8354.JPG
