Had a new rear tyre fitted last week at my dealer at St Neots. Left the dealer and had a great ride only to get off the bike and see the rear seat cowl missing!! Voicemail from Ducati St Neots " we have your seat cowl here!" a duc customer in town watched the cowl fly off the bike in town and promptly picked it up and dropped it off at the dealer.
Can i just say thanks to that person, really appreciate it.
So how did it come off? I hadn't removed it for some time and the dealer never touched it removing the tyre. I'm thinking I didn't clip it fully home? I do have the alarm unit under there which does not leave much space.
Something to be aware of people
cheers

Yup first week of owning the bike I've open the cowl and thought I locked it in...I was wrong. After a few times of it almost coming off I now make sure it's on and tug on it to make sure it's locked in. Glad you got it.

make sure the leather stripes under it are in place before locking in and once locked move it back and forth to check

This has happened on other 1199s, some of them had a piece of masking tape that you don't notice (I think because it was painted) in the area of the mechanism on the cowl or body that didnt allow full engagement. SO check that.

Mine flew off the second time I rode it, I was careless and paid the price($220) for a replacement. I did recover the damaged one and have as a spare.

Mine came off twice. Each time following having work done at the dealership. First time, the seat cowl fell off completely as soon as I left the shop to go on a short ride. I didn't know it fell off until I rode past it on the way back to the shop. Said to myself "hey, look someone lost a nice red seat cowl." Then I got a sick feeling in my stomach and looked over my shoulder to only see the black hole in my tail. The cowl had already gotten run over too many times to salvage.
Second time it happened, I felt something pushing on my lower back about a 1/4 mile from the shop. I said "i dont think I'm sitting that far back on the seat," so I reached back and felt the cowl sliding forward. Fortunately this time I caught it before it fell completely off.
Not sure if it was anyone's fault, because it looked properly affixed each time. But I went back to the shop right away and said that they have to triple check when they put the cowl on or else buy 50 spares for all the ones they're going to replace.

I have seen a few Panis at Laguna Seca MotoGP that had suffered similar situations. Make sure that the passenger grab strap is the hell out of the way - that is the culprit. Easier said than done as it move around a bit when you are replacing the cowl. If no passenger to be carried maybe removing it is the best solution.

So sad went for a short blast (distraction from studying) arrived with no rear cowl! I didn't put it back on properly
Today I collected my beloved multistrada from having engine rebuild ( under warrantee) and left the Panigale to have rea stop light fault sorted and cowl on order
