Interesting what a difference a year makes, even though the 1299 is unchanged

I'm relieved they came to the same conclusion I did.

This is especially pleasing because I haven't ridden any of those other bikes. My opinion that the 1299 was the superior bike is based purely on my desire to have it be the best one.

Here's to hoping more of my uninformed biases are validated by others in the future.

Booya. Nice job, Ducati. Hopefully the results won't delay the successor to the 1299.....

They used the year to learn riding a big twin... As I said in another thread: Most of the testriders are used to ride a four cylinder bike which revs up till 15 or 16000 rpm and has a smoother power development. It is not enough to ride a bike with a different motor characteristic some laps (and that's what all these riders do in these comparison tests: 5, perhaps 10 laps and then changing the bike... back to another four cylinder).
One of my really fast buddys bought a 1299 last year. 7 trackdays later he was still slower than before with his S1000RR. At the end of the season he gained about 2 seconds on his best laptime with the BMW. The Pani was his first Twin after riding screamers more than 12 years on the track.
Last year there was benchmark test between the 1199 R and the R1M in Germany. The riders were about 3 days on the track. The 1199 won with a small lead, was a little bit faster. The first two days, both rider were faster with the R1M.

That's almost identical to my story. Went from a BMW S1000RR, to the 1299S and it took a couple of months riding it every day, to finally get used to how to ride a twin vs. the I4. It took me a couple of days at the track, before I was faster on the 1299 than on my S1000RR.

You truly DO have to somewhat re-learn how to ride a motorcycle if you have spent a lot of time on the inline 4's. The last Ducati I owned, was a 998R and that was a long time ago and I have been riding 4 cylinder and Triumph Daytona triples for a while, before I got the 1299S. Now I wouldn't go back to the I4... I freaking LOVE the 1299.

Also interesting is how the Euro bikes are putting down 196 hp on a dyno while U.S. bikes only manage about 176 - is this strictly an ECU issue?

I took my s1000 out the other day, it's so stupid after you get use to twin engine, very vanilla none action not to much fun to ride

Different Dynos will give different figures. Something like an EC997 will read 20 hp LESS than a DynoJet; some of the European dynos are designed to try and extrapolate crank HP figures from RWHP. I wouldn't put too much stock in the HP figures they are quoting, they are only useful for comparative purposes.

I agree: Different dynos = different numbers. But in all tests in Europe the Pani has between 186 and 191 hp at the rear wheel (stock!). This test shows the highest value I've seen till today. Take a look at the S1000R: In all comparisons in Europe about 3 till 8 HP more than the 1299s. And in this test both bikes with the same output. Seems to be a well prepared Pani or one at the upper end of the series deviation or... the model 2016 has some ponies more.
