Metallic Fragments In Oil

Bought 2014 Panigale new from dealer. Break in period was conducted as per owners manual and initial 600 mile service completed by dealer. At 1000 miles and a few hard days at the track, It was time for some comprehensive maintenance to get the bike ready for Virginia International Raceway next month. After dumping oil I noticed an awful lot of metallic fragments sticking to the magnet on top of the drain plug. Is this normal? Ran a ZX6 and ZX636 before the Ducati and never noticed this much metal in my oil!!!

See you and raise you. Mine at the second oil change... ;)

Freaked me out a bit too; never saw the like of it before on any other bike I've owned, but everyone said it was normal.

I have the almost the exact picture of my drain plug with metal fragments after my latest oil change ~ 10,000 mile mark. Common? Yes. Normal? Well, let's just say that it is the norm, although if it was engineered to be so is another question that I cannot answer.

That looks completely normal; my BMW S1000RR had about double the amount of metal/shavings on my magnetic drain plug at it's first service and I got over 53,000 miles out of it with zero issues before I sold it.

Cheers.

If you have any worries, have the oil analyzed. I have mine done for the Pani on each change, and every other change on my Porsche GT3RS. Cheap insurance, and the reports are plenty comprehensive for monitoring engine condition as any usual or unusual wear will show up in the oil. Costs about $25 each time, takes about two weeks to get the report back, and they even include the collection bottle & mailer tube to send it in. Blackstone is who I use. I keep my reports to follow the various metals & fluid concentrations over time, as well as show any possible buyers how good condition the engine internals are.

Mine looked just like that as have most of my previous bikes and I over service my bikes

Change the oil earlier than first 600 miles (but use non synthetic), I did my first oil change at 150

Normal...

That's why I prefer to do a first oil change at 500kms instead of 1000kms as per factory instructions. And a second one between 1000kms and 1500kms.

Normal :) I talked to a guy who tracks his 1199S, he still gets shavings after his first desmo service :) But we concluded that changing every 3750 (half way between ducati service) probably isn't a bad thing..

Those little magnets only hold so much - if you're waiting 600+ miles to change your oil, there is a lot more than that floating around in the oil

metal doesn't float

and I did my 600 miles in two days . so I'd have to stop on the side of the road and change the oil .

this is the reason you have a filter in your motor . the magnet is for larger particles and parts that settle .

In other words . the magnet catches all the heavy stuff that settles out of an engine. all used oil has metal in it.

the only real way metal could do damage to your engine is if it was big and got past the filter.

The heavier particles will sit in the bottom of the pan and may not flush out when you drain the oil - again that little magnet can only hold so many metal particles/shavings

Does the 1299S come with a factory fitted magnetic plug ?

Sorry for the silly question but Does the 1299S come with a factory fitted magnetic plug or is it a aftermarket accessory? I am currently going through the break in period
Thanks guys

They do; however, they are not especially strong magnets.
I replaced the oem plug with one of these super magnetic plugs: DIMPLE® OIL PLUGS ANNOUNCES CUSTOM MAGNETIC PLUGS FOR DUCAT
The difference in the strength of the magnet is astounding. This magnetic plug is strong enough to pick a large wrench.

Be careful that the magnets are not too strong. I ended up next to the road with a bike that died under strange circumstances and back at the dealer the Dragon Lady's spark plugs were found stuck to the sump magnet. :p
