Spent a phenomenal 3 days ripping up T-Hill with Ken Hill and Jayson Uribe...best coaching around! Riding the '12 Tri as the '15 R spun a rod bearing then grenaded itself. End of day today went to clean/lube chain to find oily gooo all over L side of engine around shift shaft and countershaft. "B" bike...OUT Back in NorCal in 3 wks for a weekend at T-Hill...gonna take the Friday before to change both seals.

I'm losing faith in Ducati....

Dude, that just sucks! Sorry to hear that and hope your trip wasn't ruined.

And I agree that Ken Hill and gang are AWESOME! Just did 2 days there with him and the Keigwins team on 10/5 & 6. So much to learn...
 
MMC, Guys like you who are very skilled and really pushing the mechanics are the best resources for understanding the dynamics of these things under extreme conditions. A lot of guys who "track" there bike do not take these things to the "other side" either from a skill level or for fear of wadding the thing up which is perfectly understandable. I am not remotely capable of breaking one of these things from a skill perspective but my lack of ability could probably do some damage so thanks to you and all the rest of the guys here who really ride these things. These are sold as "street legal" race bikes but im wondering for how long at the level you guys are putting them through. It would be interesting to see global catastrophic failure data. Thanks again.
 
Tell me about it. Early this year i had to replace the crankcase because of hairline crack in the coolant channel. 3 months later it spun a rod bearing, had to replace all the internals. Got it back and barely a week mine then broke a valve stem.

I am just wondering if these troubles are typical to, or at least most common with the R?
 
Get an Sv650


It's slow, which makes you fast. Chassis is forgiving, sores are cheap, so are tires.

Sounds alright because it's a twin. If you're lucky, you can find one with duc fairings . So there you go.

Sorry to hear about the disintegration of your Italians.

What crap . Firstly you don't need to be skilled to blow one up in fact the opposite .

These bikes have a few weaknesses . Over revving is one the SL lightweight pistons are a failure for longevity are another .
Some people get lucky some just are the opposite .

I'm on my second R with no issues along with a friend.

You understandably tend to hear a lot about the ones that have issues.
 
Sounds like a great three days until the end. Curious as to how many miles were on it and how many were track miles?
 
This '12 has 9500 miles. 1st 2 yrs it was touring...last 3 years track only. Sat for most of last year n this year as I was riding the R. I know all makes have their issues...but it's disheartening.
