Need A New Chain

About 7 years ago my chain snapped on my BMW S1000RR. I took it to the dealer and bought a new chain and took it home. The dealership was supposed to work on my cycle the following week. Three days later I got a call, your cycle is fixed. I still had the chain with me, but the dealer installed it already. So I have this DID 525 VX for the next time.

Well that time is now. The 1299s chain is trash and the DID is said to be rated for 1000cc. Anybody know if this chain is okay for the 1299?

I know I should get a new sprockets but since this is a free chain I’m considering just slapping it in and letting it ride. Yes I know it will wear faster. I’ll probably get new sprockets.

there is something wrong in your logic.?
if you want to save money, you have to handle the new chain with respect.
new front sprocket is mandatory.
rear, if there's more than 1(2?)mm lift off with the new chain, also.
if money doesn't matter get a zvmx/erv3.

The only way I’m not using this chain is if for some reason the VX chain is not strong enough. I am not too concerned about buying new sprockets although it would be nice if I didn’t have to. A new front sprocket makes sense. I will test the rear after I get it together.

Sorry to say that if you fit a new chain to worn sprockets then its money down the drain, the new chain will wear very very quickly. Id get a new set of sprockets. A DID 525 chain will be fine on the 1299, I have a Tsubaki 520 on my 1299 and as both DID and Tsubaki are excellent chains you have nothing to worry about longevity wise

You can not mix all brands. The roller, pin and width vary. I don't think regina and did are equivalent even if both are 525.

I’ve decided to get the sprockets. A stock sprocket is about $160, so not really worth it. Trying to decide if I should get a one piece or a quick change. I will likely never change that sprocket and chain again. I’ve had this cycle for three years and it’s time for something new. 2021 is likely my last year on it.

A decent one piece is about $205, and I think I can get the superlite quick change carrier and sprocket for $240.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I got the AFAM quick change kit ($399) when I upgraded to the 15T front sprocket, and a 520 chain. It seems if you feel you need to change either sproket or the chain because of wear, you should change all 3, as they are "worn in" together. But I got the quick change setup because it is lighter, not like I change it every week lol.

Just do a search online for a set of stock sprockets if youre selling next season. If you were looking for a quickchange/lightweight option then its new chain (520) as well which defeats the purpose. If you weren't in a hurry you could ask on here for a stock setup as plenty have made the switch to 520 and have sets of matched virtually new sprockets sitting around. Ive got a new 39t with 600 miles on it that is 80% heading for the dumpster at some stage

Thanks,

Ultimately I went with a new front sprocket and a new quick change rear. I had a free 525 chain so switching to a 520 would have added costs I did not want. If I was going to add costs I wanted to add a touch of bling, and it was no the much more than a stock sprocket. The rear was a tough decision but I may keep the 1299 at least another season or two, depends on what happens in the 2022 MY and what comes out.
