Just picked up my new R yesterday. We were almost done with the paperwork and I had called to get a binder from my insurance company. They were having issues because according to there computer it was a model year 16. We finally looked at the Certificate of origin and sure as .... it was a 2016. So, we now know what's coming out in next years model. Down side is my insurance went up $100 per year between a 15 and 16.

Cuz they can. No idea. I assume because they have x number to produce for each model year for the R. If they are not making any changes it goes into the next model year. Completely guessing.

I remember something like this from 13 to 14 as well. I was pretty surprised as was my sales guy.

I did notice there is some hint to 2016 on Ducatis website when I was looking up the owners manual and accessories before purchase.

Interesting. So it was sold to you and registered as a 2016 even though it hasn't even been announced in any way shape or form by Ducati?

I think it's because the factory closes around August then everything after that is then considered the next year by the vin .
It has been like that for a long time .
I have had bikes that are production 73 bikes but stamped 74 .

the way I've always understood it is : anything produced in July is the next year model
on the vin plate is the manufacture date. so if it says 7/15 its a 2016 if it says 6/15 its a 2015
obviously the tenth digit is the tell , but the cutoff for model years is June.

So what are the new features of this 2016R you speak of?

The one thing I did notice that was different than the bike I test rode, was the race windscreen was bigger and had a rubber gasket on the edge... It also is not tinted. Not sure if that has anything to do with the model year change or not. '15 owners can speak to that.

The other thing that I noticed but have no idea when it changed... again, could just be me not paying attention... is the end of the pegs are now gnarled.

Yup. My '12 1199 is listed as a '13 by GA DMV and my insurance co. because it was built in 7/2012 and I bought in 2/2013. I, otoh, call it a '12 cause that's when it was built.

No matter what you call it, when you sell it, it's a '13. :p

I presume this is due to the Registration number plates here in the UK / Europe. They change over at the beginning of September to the following year. I waited a week before picking up my 1199s at the begining of last September so that the number plate would be registered as a 2015 bike. It's all a bit silly as the 1299 came out in 2015 proper any how!

Well, to put something in perspective, the new 2017 BMW M2 should available for order in late October, and delivery Spring of 2016. 2017, wtf, we are not even in 2016 yet.

Sucks you have to pay more for insurance, but look at the brighter side, 6 years later, your bike will only be 5 years old.

Doing the same thing with the Mutistrada's. 15's and 16's are the same and dealerships don't know if they're getting 15's or 16's.

The knurled peg ends are a change from my '15R. My '15 has a large bubble windscreen and isn't tinted so that seems to be the same.

That's strange, I only just got mine a month ago fresh off the boat and came with the standard 1299 screen.

Thats got to equate to at least 0.5 sec on the track :D
