Hello everyone!
My name is HypermotardHurt from Colorado Springs. I work in the automotive industry in finance and sales. I’ve been a Ducati hypermotard owner for about three years. I enjoy riding canyons mountains and everything in between. Pikes Peak is literally in my backyard! Im excited to be a member and have lots and lots to learn .Very new to the bike world and Ducati

Right now I find myself in a bit of a dilemma. I’m looking for some advice from experienced Ducati owners.

I own 2010 hypermotard 796 that was my first bike ever! I got it in 2016 with 3500 miles on it and just hit 15,000 miles. Have had some great times and met amazing people. The 796 made me fall in love with riding so much that soon after I acquired a 2009 R1. So both bikes are 10+ years old I find myself dumping $2k to $4k every year in maintenance and repairs not to mention the downtime. I ride year round and I ride a lot . The older hypermotard is financed and the R1 is paid off! Im sick of spending so much money and having so much downtime on the older two bikes that I’m considering the new 950SP and trading the old hypermotard for a clean wash and than selling the r1 to use as a down payment.

The stubborn side of me wants two bikes and two style options.

The more experienced me wants the 2019 Hypermotard 950 SP!

The finance side of me tells me I can have the 1 new bike (950SP) for less monthly cost than what I spend on the cost to keep the 2010 Hypermotard running and safe/payments.
The question is do I keep two older bikes that have tons of downtime and random issues / cost or do I say screw it and get the 950 Sp and have one bike and one insurance policy and a couple years of free maintenance.

2010 Hypermotard just hit 15,000/ small payoff
2009 Yamaha YzfR1 has 12,000 miles and has been in the shop for 6+ months /owned out right

Help!!!!

I've spent my entire life riding "dirt bike" style motorcycles, mainly supermoto and I can tell you that the 950SP is unlike anything I've ridden in the past. The power is linear and usable for the street but what takes the cake is all the features this thing has. It's pretty good for hooligan commuting, but isn't much good over 75mph (or any highway for that matter) because of the wind-blast.

If you are ok with staying on the back wheel all the way up to 75mph though, then this is the bike for you.

If you are not doing track days on the R1 then maybe switching to the 950 SP would be OK. I have owned a lot of motorcycles including a GSXR-1000, KTM 1290 Superduke R, and more recently a Ducati Panigale V4s. The V4s was just an incredibly fast and sophisticated sport bike, but the 950 SP is the most fun street bike I have ever owned. Not ideal on the highway as already mentioned, but otherwise so much fun. Power is good and the handling is really good. The 950 is a significant redesign from the 939 even though the engine size is the same for the two. My dealer has 3 939s on the floor but I went for the 950 SP even though it meant a wait for the bike to arrive.

I picked up a very nice (used 600mile) 2018 Hypermotard 939 for a very good deal. You may want to look at that option if money is a problem.
I like the styling of the old bike versus the new 950. I doubt that I would even notice the performance difference between the 939 and 950. I have the base model. It reminds me of my 2003 KX250 with even more grunt. This bike is silly fun, I'e turned of the wheelie control, ABS is next:) I'm sure you are well aware ho much fun this bike is. This bike complements Francesca my V4S. I could sit in my garage for hours and just stare at both bikes.

How do you compare it to your Super Duke? I'm thinking of buying one but it's hard to justify when my SD1290 is so good and after dropping 18lbs off the wheels and front rotors by adding BST Rapid Tek wheels and wave super bike rotors she's amazing!!!!

The Superduke R has a LOT more torque and power. No contest. Not even close. My 950 SP feels way more agile then the 1290 though. I got from the Superduke R to the Hypermotard in a very roundabout way. There were a couple of other bikes in between. If I already had a Superduke R with carbon fiber wheels I doubt I would trade it for a Hypermotard. The extra agility would be nice but you would really feel the lack of power compared to the 1290. Also the suspension is better on the Hyper. I was never a fan of the stock suspension on my 1290, but I think the front forks were messed up from the factory. I did a fork kit and one fork is supposed to be compression and the other one rebound. It's been awhile but one seemed fine and the other one did not seem to be working right. All good after I installed the kit. BTW I has BST wheels on my 1290 and the Hyper still is way more agile.

Wow sounds like we have very similar 1290's. I have new suspension on the Duke and the BST rims. Love the difference from stock. Your definitely right about the power of the SD. The torque is intoxicating for sure! I love the look of the SP950 but may hold off for a while. Thanks very much for the insight :D
