New to the Hypermotard

Hi all,

I'm new to the street bikes and I'm really interested in the Hypermotard.

All my experience is riding dirt bikes and amateur racing.

What kind of things should I look for in buying a hypermotard and what are the good years and or models for this bike?

What else do you think is important in this bike?

Sorry, I'm new to the Hypermotard thing. I found a nice used 2018 base model 939. It is a silly motorcycle. It is woefully underdamped which actually isn't a bad thing. It needs a steering damper (should come stock) because you'll get this thing crossed up allot I just love the look of her (named her Zita). I'm turning her into my commute bike, but I plan to take her to a trackday in October.

Stay away from the 13 and 14 bikes. There were alot of very harmful recalls that many didnt take advantage of. The SP version of them has the higher spec wheels and suspension but even at that the SP suspension needs tuning (possibly a spring and new/different) oil to make it as phenomenal as people claim it to be out of the box. I have a base 13 with Andreani cartridges set for my weight and they work great but I still need to make some adjustments. The SP also comes with stronger and lighter wheels. If you find a smoking deal on a base bike dont worry, there are some mods that make it equal to or better than the SP. Although, the rear shock on the SP is really expensive and a comparable aftermarket unit for fanbase version will start at $700. Fueling on these bikes are odd. There is what is known as the 5000rpm surge/dip. A tuner such as rapidbike, rexxer or power commander will fix that. Belts are suggested to be replaced every 2 years or 18k miles. It's not difficult to do the belts yourself and there are many videos on how to do it. Valve shimming is a bit tough though. Maintenance on a ducatinis what scares people. They are fantastic fun bikes with power everywhere.
The geometry of these bikes indicate that a steering damper isnt needed. I have added one because I found a crazy deal on it and like things that sparkle. I notice zero difference and it's been my daily driver for 2 years.
