Rear brake seized on me today. Bike felt heavy while I was riding. Got off to see the rear rotor was glowing red. Bike only has 1560 miles, wtf?! Any other people have had break problems?

Was the brake pedal adjusted up or down at any point?

No not at all. Had Rizoma rear sets put on early last year at my Ducati dealer. Rode through the summer with no problems. If it were an issue I would have noticed then. Been riding this spring with no problems until today. When the bike and fluid cools the break releases but as it warms up again it starts expanding again. Severely doubt its a pedal thing. Bike was towed to the dealer. Waiting to hear the conclusion. Luckily im still under warranty by a couple of months.

mine seized after i had the pads worn down (>10k miles) and they squeezed in between the caliper and the disc.

with good pads it shouldn't happen.

is there a spring on the rizoma pedals where you can adjust the return force?

So your brake fluid is over a year old? Symptom you're describing indicates classic moisture contamination.
Brake heats up. Water in fluid expands as temp rises. Brake starts dragging causing further heat in caliper/fluid. Runaway thermal and it eventually locks rear brake.

Replace the fluid. And do it regularly.

Well got a call back from the dealer. Apparently when i had the rearsets installed they didnt have enough free play on the plunger. They're blaming it on the Ducati dealer I had it done at. They're alson saying the front doesn't have enough free play either. Ducati is going to get a call next. This is BS.

Hi guys,

I have had a similar problem on my Tricolore with the standard rear sets.

I came in from a track session and noticed that my rear rotor was blued and whiffs of smoke coming off the calliper. When I pushed down on the lever there was NO free play at all. I know for sure there was free play there previously as I give the bike a full checkover before each track day. This was my second session for the day.

The problem turns out to be the lock nut on the pushrod to the rear master cylinder was loose and the pushrod UNWOUND activating the rear brake. Sounds crazy but true.

I mentioned this to my Ducati dealer and pointed out that because the locknut is inside the spring and not easily checked this could be a major safety problem. Riders beware!

I had this problem when I put on the rizoma's myself...free play was fine, when the bike was off...Once the anti-lock brake pump is activated when the bike is on, the brakes drag. Dealer probably didn't notice either.....needed a new rotor and caliper when said and done.
Lesson learned

I sure wish I would have read this thread before buying my rear sets...

This also just happened to me with Woodcraft rear sets... It felt good after the install but I never checked the free play after starting the bike so I killed the pad rotor and caliper. They must have been dragging just enough to generate heat since the bike felt fine while riding.

Now I am waiting for the parts to come in so I can fix the bike which I just bought and only has 201 miles on it. oh well I still have the KTM RC8R to ride around until the 1199 is back on the road.

I blame Ducati for making the worst stock rear sets on the planet lol... just kidding but they really are bad stock rear sets.

The problem is the brake fluid expanding with heat. I had this effect when installing the Ducabike rear sets on the Monster last month. Luckily I found out before it was too late. Now I always make sure that there is enough brake pedal play when bike is cold.

This happened to my rear brake today! Brake fluid leaked through the caliper(?). And the pads are done, I see metal on metal wear on the rotor.

Do I need to replace the rear caliper? If so what brand/model is good?
Also, what can I do to mitigate this from happening again?

Bike brake setup is stock. 2012 1199. 6800 miles. I just bought this bike 2 weeks ago with 6400 miles.

Thanks for the help

aftermarket rear set = good luck getting ducati to honor warranty
but if they dealer installed the part I can see them blaming something to get ducati to pay for it.

I remember when the 1098 was having problems with giller and rizoma rear-set and ducati send out a letter to the dealer saying that they wont cover bike brake if those parts were installed.
