Passenger foot pegs

Well, this is apparently 1299 specific, so here it goes..

Have anyone actually installed or removed the passenger pegs themselves? I can't figure out if there is a way to get them out after removing the screws.. It looks like they are stuck in the exhaust heat shield with some pins/pegs cast into the support..

Is there a way, or do I have to disassemble more to get them off?
 
It's a bugger to get them off. I wrapped the peg in cloth, and then just pressed down on the peg to lever it up and off the insert.
 
yeah, I figured that's one way to do it, but i was hoping for a more "proper" way.. I don't know if I could "pry" them back in when the missus wants go come with me for a ride :p
