I'm interested in going to the Australian GP round this year. Every year my wife and I try to go to a race abroad, this is the one she picked this year. I know we have a lot of Aussie members here so I thought I would ask for recommendations on travel, where to stay etc. Can I stay in Melbourne and get to the island or do I need to find a place there? I know this is a ways out but I would like to start the planning soon. Any other tips would be appreciated.

You can actually stay on the island there is a town called Cowes , accomadation is a bit tight when an event is on , but have a look on the net . Melbourne is a 2 hour drive. Not much in between.

Its better to stay at the Is. Melb is too far away. Book early.

Hi Rogue,
There are many advantages to staying in Melbourne I.e great food, places to visit and shopping for the wife. There is also a great daily bus service to the island from the city centre
Philip island is great but unless you ride there there's nothing to do . I stay just off the island at the town called San Reno . There is a great hotel called Silver Water, have a look.

Well done on choosing the best GP in the world to watch

Thanks. I'll look into it but four hours of driving per day (If we stayed in Melbourne) doesn't sound ideal. We usually make a vacation out of it so we would stay a few days in Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns etc. Probably looking at 12-14 days total.

I'm looking at houses on VRBO. It looks like there's a few available on the island. We used VRBO for Jerez two years ago due to hotels being full and it worked out great.

Hi Rogue,

Unless you ride down it would be an unpleasant experience. Sounds like you are on to something at least.

That being said the ride down and back is awesome. Lots of crowds along the way and generally a great way to finish the day.

See you there

If you're brave you can also stay at places like Cranbourne. We usually stay in a pub there and it's only a short drive /ride to the track.

I did stay at a luxury unit at Cowes one year with about six mates, had a blast!

Get hold of a bike and go for a ride around the track on the Monday after as well. One of the bests tracks in the world.

Staying on the Island is what it's all about, it's a great venue. Someone may chime in that can offer a room for you in a house that they have booked.

Come on you guy's offer a room up :)

I'll be there this year. Have a nice apartment to stay in. Hopefully will see Chaz take the double.

Stay on the island if possible. There is a plenty of atmosphere Saturday night in the main street of Cowes which ads to the weekend. Traffic especially Sunday is terrible trying to get on to the Island. Enjoy it, always a great way to spend a vacation too.

Keep us updated as I should be there at a place called Smith's beach.... about 1 mile from the track.....will be there with about 10 pissed blokes! it's a great atmosphere especially if the weather is good.
