Hello.

I used Melco several months ago to fix my MAP sensor but since that was the only time I used it I want to make sure I did it right this time. I do know that my Melco hardware works (cables) because I have used them successfully before to get engine codes for the MAP sensor.

I went for a ride on Sunday and when I was getting started (pulling out of the parking structure I was in and so forth) I noticed that the idle was lagging a bit on returning to the baseline idle speed. When I released the throttle there were a couple/few times that it stayed a couple hundred RPM high for a brief bit and then returned to baseline idle speed. Oh well.

Then I went out for a two-hour ride and nothing unusual happened throughout the ride. I stopped and started up the motor a couple times at the place I met a friend and one place to take a picture and then as I was coming back I was about to get off the freeway and for about 45 seconds the check engine light came on and then went away. I got off and made it home without incident. Nothing was perceivable in the way the bike was running (no funny sounds or loss of power).

Anyway, I broke out Melco this morning and got it set up (I think).

I plugged in the laptop, opened Melco (which takes several minutes on my computer), made sure the correct COM Port was being used, turned the ignition on but did not start it, and pressed connect. It said it was connected and the lights flashed on the scanner doo-dad box on the cable.

I went to the engine code scanner tab and pressed the button on the top left to scan for error codes. From what I remember that button does not "blink" or "blip" or anything to indicate that you clicked it it just stays exactly the same. Anyway, no error codes came up despite trying this a few times and waiting a while. I remember that it gave the codes pretty rapidly before last time I used it so I don't think I needed to click it and wait a long time.

Melco was working otherwise because if I turned the motor on it would tell me my engine temp and RPM etc. It could tell what gear I was in, in the Passive Test tab. But, no error codes.

Should I just regard this as a random blip that the check engine line came on or what since no error codes came up and it was so brief and then went away?

I appreciate anyone's advice.

Eric

Not all codes are retained.

In many events, turning the bike one and off a total of three times while whatever condition caused the code is no longer causing the code, will clear it.

Not all faults results in a retained check engine light or error code either.

I’m not convinced Melco has the same functionality on the newer bikes as it did the older ones.

Okay thanks. I guess I will just wait to see if it turns up again.
I am not even convinced the idling thing was a problem or related to it anyway.
