As the title states, does anyone happen to know if it is possible to add ABS to a 1199 without it?

A member here selling his non-ABS S model says its possible, and I asked, but have not gotten a response on how.

Any help?

From what i understand, it would be cost prohibitive to add ABS.
Talk to your dealer

well first of all - almost no dealer (or no intelligent one) would touch this because of liability reasons. It's not something that any dealership would expose their company to install.

But from a technical reason - even if you got a dealer to agree to do it - it might be worth more trouble than its worth to install it.

-You have to get the ABS valve controller and whatever that costs (probably north of $1k is my guess) and install that onto the bike.

-you need to get ABS sensor hubs for the rotors.

- you need to route the abs sensor wire to the ABS valve for the front and rear wheels.

-you need to route the MC that originally went to the caliper to the ABS Valve for both wheels

-you need to route an additional line from the ABS valve to the caliper now for both wheels.

-you need to enable/update/program the ECU that you now have ABS and make sure its selectable and active.

So its not trivial. Can it be done ? Sure. Most dealers won't touch it even if they could do it is my guess. So its probably cheaper to trade the bike in and get same comparable bike with ABS. Thats why its probably not "worth it" to retrofit.

Thanks, I have. They we unsure.

Why not?

I agree, if it takes all of that, it is not worth it. A member mentioned it only needed the "ABS Module" so I thought I would look into it.

Thanks for the answers.

Yeah, some people think its just a module to plug in and voila - it will work. They don't realize what the rest of the "plumbing" for lack of a better term that needs to happen to make that so called module work.

I was under this impression from talking to my dealer..they told me the only thing missing from a bike without ABS is just the brain. From a production standpoint, they are all built with the same lines and the computer brain that is mounted on the upper right side of the bike is not installed on the non-abs bikes.

So few of them are made without ABS worldwide that it is logical from a production standpoint to make it as easy as possible to add or delete that option. Especially for the small amount of money it costs to have it or not.

Of course, I am just going off what the guys at my dealership told me... it very well could be incorrect but I tend to believe it.

I did see a used ABS module for sale on EBAY for about $400 if that helps... and the plug is right there on the upper right side of your bike..

-you need to get ABS sensor hubs for the rotors. ALREADY ON THE BIKE FOR THE DTC

- you need to route the abs sensor wire to the ABS valve for the front and rear wheels. AS ABOVE

-you need to route the MC that originally went to the caliper to the ABS Valve for both wheels. CORRECT THE SINGLE LINE GOES TO THE ABS UNIT.

-you need to route an additional line from the ABS valve to the caliper now for both wheels. ADDITIONAL LINES GO TO FRONT AND REAR REPLACING THE EXISTING

-you need to enable/update/program the ECU that you now have ABS and make sure its selectable and active. ABS SYSTEM CONTROLLER WILL NEED TO BE ADDED.

The dash is all ready for the ABS System as you can see the icon within the menu but it is not enabled.

This is from memory, of course I could have forgotten some items/tech info.
you will be lucky to get any dealer to do this work as previously stated due to the liability involved etc etc.
Shouldn`t be too difficult to do yourself if you are mechanically minded and with the availability of secondhand parts getting better on famous auction sites would make getting the parts quite easy!!!!
Hope this helps.

So did you get the ABS installed?

I'm no expert, but if you look at an abs vs non-abs model I'm pretty sure you'll see missing plumbing along the frame on the right side. I don't think it would be a trivial thing to do. So I'd move on & fine an ABS equipped model. Some like it, some don't. I, personally, like it.

Thanks! Thats exactly what I was after. I will see about picking up the parts.
