Rear Cover Stuck!

Looks like the rear cover key latch is no longer working, causing the cover to get stuck to the bike. I have tried to disassemble the rear tail as much as possible but not much can be done without removing the cover. The key mechanism seems to work and have tried grabbing the latch cable and tugging as hard as possible, but the latch does not seem to want to budge.

I was wondering if anyone has seen anything like this? I was able to bend the plastic cover so the rear is free and can definitely see where the latch mechanism does not want to move at all no matter how much I pull on the cable. I'm hoping i don't have to cut the cover off but have run out of options. Maybe someone is looking to part with their cover...?

Here are some pics of the stubborn cover that will not come off!

ahh mark to the rescue as i had this happen to me as well . surprising do the the quality control ducati has bwhahaha.

ok the piece that pulls the cable has a plastic grommet that probably broke. if you go look through the right vent from behind you will be able to see it. if its the grommet its not making tension so the lock won't unlock. you will have to either slide your dinger in there or undue as much of that rear panel as possible and pull it with your fingers and it will disengage the latch.

when i took my bike to the stealership they actually wrote on the work order my carbon fiber mid tail piece cause this. i said you didn't even look at it. i took it home found it and had it done under warranty.

wait your seat is off you should see it in there pull the cable the seat will pop off just look at the mechanism when you turn the key you will understand what i mean by the cable .

Thanks Mark. I was able to locate the release pin and it popped off no problem. You were right, the plastic piece was broken that connects the cable to the latch.

glad i could help it drove me nuts when stealership said i did it. i went back and i said can you see this we were looking through the vent. i said thats why it doesn't work. we took off the seat . they fixed under warranty.

glad i can help you out.

kinda off topic but there are quite a few aftermarket rear covers on ebay at a decent price if you break or lose yours. the color and fit may not be exact but i'm sure you can work with it. this summer was so hot the black piece that is glued to the red cowl came undone and flew off while i was riding, i got home and noticed it was gone. i reviewed my video footage and i spotted it flying off on the freeway, i went back in my car and retrieved it undamaged. but they are cheap and plentiful on ebay, you may or may not get one with the ducati logo.

The cable just came off the pin of the latch. I used an exhaust spring hook to put it back on.

I saw the plastic piece that can break that Mark is talking about. It is part of the tail fairing.

Crisis averted!

Photo of the plastic that can break and NOT what I had to fix.

I realize this is a 6 year old topic but I had the same issue with an 899 I just bought and couldn't find any useful photos so I made a video explaining the locking system and how I was able to bypass it.
