This is from the 1199 owners manual

"The STANDARD adjustments from fully closed are as
follows:
compression: 10 clicks from fully closed;
rebound: 10 clicks from fully closed;
spring preload: FULLY OPEN (counterclockwise): 6
turns."

and rear,

"STANDARD calibration; from the fully closed position
(clockwise) unscrew:
compression: 10 clicks from fully closed;
rebound: 10 clicks from fully closed;
spring preload: 0.47 in (12 mm).

My question is which way is fully closed? Clockwise or counterclockwise?

Fully closed is always clockwise :)

Thanks for the help, I was able to get it once my wife and kids stopped talking to me and I could read it clearly. Now Im back to stock settings, and resetting for it based on my experience with the bike so far.

Been slowly tuning my suspension, wanted to return to stock before I got too out of whack with it and start over.

you would want to set sag first - get sag set for front and rear correctly, and the compression and rebound settings "generally speaking" in the middle of the range....softening or tightening from that point is easier than doing it along with preload involved at the same time....

knowing the spring rate installed on the bike is a good first step - your weight in relation to the spring rate installed on the bike should guide you as to how you want things set up

if you like aggressive riding, you would want less sag, versus wanting a "more comfortable" ride that would dictate a softer (more sag) setting...its all within a few millimeters of (5 to 10mm makes a difference)

check with your shop to help set sag correctly, so you don't spend too much time and effort on it, as you need the bike suspended up, taking all weight off the springs to get it done right the first time
