Sunday morning I got a text from my Sgt. that Calvin Ealey, a fellow officer, died from a motorcycle crash. Early in the morning he was riding on a local street and somehow lost control of his bike. He was not wearing a helmet and hit his head on a metal light pole. This is the first time in my ten years on the dept. that an active duty officer has died. He had been an officer for nine years and spent the last six to seven in the gang task force of our dept.

It still hasn't really sunk in yet. He has a wife, and two sons. It's horribly sad this has happened. Every once in a while I feel angry that he wasn't wearing a helmet. I don't think he had been riding motorcycles for very long and don't know what protective gear he used or didn't use.

So, I must forward a huge thank you to all the members of this forum who stress ALL THE GEAR, ALL THE TIME. I have been on here for about three years now and it seems that everyone on here is wearing all their protective gear. In the ten years I've been an officer I've done my share of death notifications. The worst ones were the ones that could have been prevented.

Thank you all for being world class guys and gals.

I never understood the no helmet law. It's one of the laws that should change immediately. Nothing about riding without a helmet feels or looks cool. Maybe he may have lived if he had a helmet on. Sad news regardless.

R.I.P Calvin Ealey

I needed to read that today I've got two kids and religiously wear my helmet . I needed a reminder Of why I wear a helmet and gear and also to remind me I need to keep my head on straight on the dangerous public roads.
but for the grace of God go I

I appreciate all the support. I will forward all the prayers and thoughts to the family.

I do wish helmet laws were tougher. Its been several years since they have relaxed the laws. I have noticed that a large majority of people on motorcycles don't wear a helmet. I have seen that most people on sports bikes do wear a helmet.

I'll agree I can't understand how seatbelts are mandatory but helmets are optional in some states. In PA its not a law to wear a helmet.. I think it should be a nationwide law!
