I guess I'm not sure why anyone would spend more than about $20 modding an 899. Even for $1000 I'd just spend the extra money for an 1199.
I will be happy to take a stab at that... after tomorrow, I will have spent a little over what a base 1199 would cost OTD.
I will have Termis, Rizoma rearsets, a Yoyodyne slipper clutch, CRG levers, Rizoma reservoirs, DP fuel cap, Shorai battery, sliders, and a 'R' pillion cover with matching decals all installed by the dealer. All of this and I think I do a decent job of keeping up with liter bikes on twisties or the equivalent of a short track where you can't really begin to make use of the top end HP of the 1199.
I was originally in the market for the 1199R, but after riding the 899, it seemed to suit my purpose. The current US margin on the 899 makes the bike an absolute deal.
Don't get me wrong, of course. The 1199 is an awesome bike, but I just didn't need that amount of power... yet.
Edit: what I don't understand is the 1199 vs. 899 issue... they are both great bikes made by Ducati.
