Small clutch cover oil leak

I installed my GB Racing covers, when I removed the bolts some oil came out which is fine since I was doing an oil change anyway.

When I reinstalled everything I have a very slow oil leak from one of the bottom bolts for the clutch cover side. I have few questions:

* Does this clutch cover use a gasket, sealant, or an o-ring? I looked a the parts manual and it shows an o-ring but it doesn't show in the pic that it what is used to keep oil from leaking.

* If it is an o-ring, did I bust it and need a new one or do I just need to put the bike on the side stand, loosen all the bolts press around the cover tighten in a criss cross pattern?

* What tricks do you guys do to have this sealed 100%? This was an overnight leak so I take it it will be worse when the bike gets up to temp and running at the track.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, opposed to you, i m not a techie.. :) so that q exceeds my knowledge.. :)

okay, so I just threw her on the side stand...took the GB case cover, and stock clutch cover..removed the teal o-ring that seals the clutch cover and cleaned both surfaces with brake cleaner and also inspected/cleaned the o-ring.

Put everything back together, holding pressure on the clutch cover while lightly tightening the bolts in the criss cross pattern before the final tightening and boom no more leaks. I even let her run up to 220F degrees while on the rear stand and no oil seepage, I will check back tomorrow morning to see if she's totally sealed.

It was a pretty easy job, once I actually looked at the clutch cover there are no sensors or actuator arms or springs that connect in there like my other track bikes, its really just a cover :)

Couple of years ago mine had a very small weep after putting the DP cover on. That and the tail tidy was the first mod I did. I just nipped up the bolts a little tighter and it stopped. I cannot remember the correct torque.

I tried to have a quick look for you on the torque post but could not find it.

I had the exact same issue with both my 1199's I installed a new clutch cover on. Removed, cleaned, and retightened/torqued bolts in a crosshatch pattern and all fixed.

Glad you got it fixed. :)

There's an o-ring there, yes (and it's green). It's a ..... to get out, though (you need a pick), so chances are it's nestled in its recess just fine. I suspect the issue, as Mr. White has stated, is that the cover is just misaligned due to the order in which you torqued the bolts. Remove, clean, inspect, and then retighten it all properly (hand tighten all the bolts, then tighten opposite pairs gradually (12 o'clock, six o'clock, 3 o'clock, 9 o'clock, then repeat until all are finally tight).

Sealant

Hi guys.

I try to find here an answer for my question. May you can tell me... Should I use a sealant under the clutch cover? Or the O-ring will be enough?

The o-ring itself is enough, if it was leaking like mine was it is likely because it was not tightened evenly in a criss cross pattern...also a VERY light smear of oil on the o-ring will help also so it doesn't snag or pull up during install.

I reused the same o-ring three times, no problems at all.
1st: make sure everything is perfectly clean before reassembling the clutch cover
2nd: put some engine oil on the o-ring before installing
3rd: be very careful when putting the cover onto the engine: o-ring must be aligned in the cover's notch.
4th: personal trick - I alway check the surfaces with an Arkansas Stone to make sure perfect fittment/leak tightness.
