I'm trying to troubleshoot a recent failure. Short version, riding on track bike running great then all of a sudden bike looses power, backfiring like crazy. Limp back to pits and bike dies when I pull in clutch. Battery seems okay, I was able to get it to re-fire briefly but it only ran a short time and died. I'm home now and starting to trouble shoot. Pulled rear plug it doesn't look horrible but I will replace because I'm here. Both coils test at .7ohms, but when I test the vertical cylinder wire I get infinite resistance and continuity testing shows no continuity. To me this looks like a bad wire, what sayethnthe rest of you?

It looks like my vertical spark plug cap failed. I unscrewed the cap from the wire and it was fine. I tested the cap and it was an open circuit. I cut it open and found the cap assembly to have heavy carbon deposits which isolated the component. I cleaned and reassembled and now it has continuity and resistance of the cap is 5k ohms.

@Domino did you by chance get that spark plug wire wet while on the trail? I think I have the same issue, but mine only happens after getting a little wet!

It turns out that this wasn’t my issue. I replaced the wires and coil and it didn’t solve the problem. What had happened was that somehow on track the plug possibly overheated and bent the spark plug electrode closing the gap which led to no spark. I replaced the plug and it resolved the problem. This was on the horizontal cylinder.
Bike is a 2015 1299s

Resolved my issue as well. I had a pin size hole in my boot which caused arcing when wet. So, I had to get a new boot aka used off of ebay. Onced replaced my issue was resolved.
