I started noticing this a couple track days ago. At first I thought it was a one-time rock chip, but it continues to grow in size. It's on the right side, near the bottom behind the front wheel. It appears to be wearing laterally - that is, the damage grooves are horizontal. Looks like someone took a dremel too it.

I know it's growing at this point, but have no idea what is causing it! Seems like it should be something simple but I can't figure it out...

Holy smokes-do you have a cover on that radiator or is all that (what looks like) damage to the radiator itself? Thats one big paint chip for sure too! Hmmm.

If so, I'd seriously think of putting one on asap my friend. Andrew Cox is a friend of mine if you'd like me to introduce you to him? :)

I got chips like that, on my 1098, from putting my bike in the wheel chock on my Kendon trailer.

If I pushed it in too fast, the suspension would compress and cause the back of the chock to nick the fairing.

Could it be a a rock chip that's growing in size? Do you frequent a gravel road or something similar? Once a chip begins it could continue...although ChrisE does make a valid observation!

It's defenatly a wheel choke on your trailer , scraping your fairing , you have to reposition your choke closer to the front and try not to compress you suspension to hard when transporting , I learned the hard way myself with two bottoms messed up :(

Your fairing looks like it's not fitted correctly. The red and black inner piece are supposed to be flush. That wear could possibly be from your tire hitting the fairing at certain loads or turns.

It absolutely is my Kendon trailer - thanks guys!

To the others - the moisture is some windex I used to clean the area for a better picture. The radiator isn't that bad, the flash on my phone just makes it look like .....

It's definitely not the wheel rubbing... :p

I've taken the fairings off and on a bunch of times this weekend, they aren't fitting perfectly at the moment!

This.

Nothing is worse than getting a DNF due to a punctured radiator.

On a side note, I bought some touch up paint from www.touchupdirect.com, comes in a touch up pen, aerosol can or just paint. Perfect color match.

Get the primer, base color and clear coat and make those chips disappear.

Hi, this is a really late reply, but I've had the same issue with my new 1299. The cause of the problem is that when the front tire is turned to to right and you compress the front forks hard, the tire actually rubs against the lower fairing (see my pic).
