what do you do with your helmets

just curious i am coming up on a time where a helmet or 2 of mine expire. 5 years or 7 years unworn. ive sold most of my helmets as i buy them for no damn reason (working on that problem) but i have one or 2 i never got rid of that are nearing the so called end.

do you guys throw them out?

I never throw them out. Start a shelf in the garage if they're nice helmets. If they're junk toss em. "shelf lives" for helmets are widely known as a marketing scheme to get people to replace them. If its in good condition and hasn't been banged around i cant see them deteriorating besides the foam which should be replaced anyways. If you keep them out of sunlight to where the sun isn't baking them constantly and out of the weather and clean than whats going to break down?

i tend to crash a lot, so i have to buy new helmets, when the old ones don't live up to the standard any more.

i just throw them out, they are usually pretty rank after a few seasons at the track.

As for keeping after their shelf life i value my head to much so IMO it's cheap insurance to replace.

i have to say i do struggle with my dirt bike helmets as i beat the sh*t out of them and they are constantly getting hit by branches/trees etc so i replace them every two season.

I take mine to the local fire station, where they use them in RTA training by cutting them off
the practice casualty. Did this several times over the years in the UK and have just had
confirmation that they would like them here in Sweden too.

Arai offers this service, i've used it once, but they just turned around and said it's not fit for use anymore.

It was a scratch on the chin area

the glues start to break down and the fiberglass/ to foam area starts to degrade after a few years so not to be worn...

other than that if they are awesome looking helmets or have a sentimental value i'll keep them other than that donate to Firedept training programs or toss them

I still have a Bell Star from 1980 and a Bell Moto 3 from around the same time. They look retro cool on the shelf but you should seen how the lining has just broken down to dust. The foam lining still looks okay though.

what do you do with your helmets
