Unfortunately that would be me . I just got my bike running great and of course it had to happen after all the hassles I had trying to keep it from stalling ,surging below 45mph running lean and hot etc etc. were finally fixed! I installed a new RapidBike Racing module and it absolutely transformed the bike! No more crappy throttle response. It can now run at 45 mph *in 4th gear! around 3300 rpm and it runs smooth and pulls smoothly. I only had about 30 minutes on it before I took it to TWS for a track day. I had also just purchased a new Motogyro mount for my GoPro so I told a friend who owns a new R1 I would follow and film him for a couple of laps. (My bike was running so well for the first time since I owned it (due solely to the addition of the RapidBike and the Sprint filter!) .... Well about the second lap I decided to ramp it up and decided to pass everyone on the inside between turn 9 and turn 10 (the Horseshoe) This is my favorite area to pass. Well I ran up pretty fast on the inside and braked pretty hard and started to lay the bike over into the 180 degree turn when I noticed a couple of guys in my path so I ran wide (thinking I would just go around the outside) *I have done this many many tmes before on the old ZX10 as well as this bike.. (Yes I know you shouldn't run around them on the outside line at the Horseshoe but it is so much fun! However I DID have a lot of lean angle... Even so everything was pretty stable until I was about 3\4ths of the way around and suddenly the bike went into a highside  After being literally hurled into the air (and then flopping around a few times on the track) I sat up and looked around. The bike was on its left side about ten feet out in the grass and it was still running! ( I thought these bikes were supposed to have a kill switch when they fall over?) Well, I tried to stand up and felt pain in my right heel. I knew what that meant since I used to race motocross LOL...

So I just sat there till the ambulance folks showed up.
They checked me out and said I was OK so I got a ride back to the paddocks. I guess I was still in shock since for the life of me I could not figure out how the back end could come around like that so fast? I had brand new Pirelli SuperCorsa SC's that had been on warmers. Great traction up until then.... Then a guy came up to me in the paddock and apologized and said that his bike had been leaking coolant for about 4 turns. Oh well.. It was probably a combination of me coming in too hard (totally my fault) and something slick in my path... I got a severly bruised right ankle ( and evidently after talking to the doctor today) a fracture on my heel. ( Of course the obligatory bruised shoulder/arm) and also a bruised left hand and a jammed thumb on my right hand just to top it off!
I had just installed the T Rex sliders and a Woodcraft fork sliders a while back.. I ended with having to replace the front cowl, right side upper panel, right rear tail panel and a handlebar and a peg. No tank damage! Not even a scratch. From the video it looks like the bike slid on the tarmac for about 12 feet and evidently was protected very well. Those T Rex sliders are rather fugly but man do they work!

Overall all things considered, I came out OK (although the best price I could get on the parts was $1700.00 )

Oh well, Dammit, I finally got my bike running excellent thanks to the RapidBike Racing module and Sprint filter and now I won't be able to ride for about two weeks.:(

Oh well .... happens

A first hand 1299 crash report! Sounds like she did pretty good, glad to hear you are OK.

I've got the T-rex sliders on my bike as well. Sounds like if you had race fairings you would have escaped with virtually no damage? What happened to the handlebar?

Video or it didn't happen :D

I just need to figure out how to download the new video to U Tube so you all can see it. It is pretty cool camera stays level and you can see the bike lean. I will try to figure it out soon and post it.

Yeah It would have cost about $900 for the race stuff. (which is basically the stock body unpainted)

Will probably look for another bike to crash on since this one has become such an investment.
Perhaps a 899 ? It would be great to have a bike that handles a s well as the 1299 but I could really wring it out LOL..

coming out more or less in one piece, I'm glad you did!!

BIG question about the bike still running. Shouldn't ALL modern bikes have a tip over sensor that kicks in when the bike's been on it's side for a few seconds??

I remember in 2010 when the S1000RR first came out - they sold the tipover sensor as an accessory, then decided they'd give them out for free. I had bought one, so a couple months later my dealer calls and says I'm getting a refund, and would I prefer cash or store credit? Store credit, duh, I'll be over later today :p

I am not a circle track guy so I have limited knowledge on the specific protocols, I can only go off of 1/4 drags when I make a comparison"¦.

If the guy says he was leaking coolant for FOUR turns, why the .... didn't he get off the track after the first ? or as soon as he realized. Am I missing something here, or is he the major contributing factor to this ??

If this was an NHRA track
1. He would have been flagged in pre inspection
2. The starter would have not let him prestage or even warm tires with something dripping

WTF ?

OK... Here is the video.. (The crash is at about the 4;15 mark) It was about 10:00 am. I wasn't even pushing it yet since the track was still green and possible a little damp..BTW.. The tires were brand new Supercorsa SC DOT..compound (and still had the labels on them) However they were sticking well through the first lap. and I had just got them off the warmers..

I must have simply gone in a little too hot and a little too deep (and with a little more lean angle than anticipated). ** I have taken this line many times before to get around the outside of other riders that are going around the inside line in the horseshoe...
But this time it caught me..
After the crash you can hear stuff going on in the background and eventually they pick up my bike and I pick up the camera etc. Lot's of crap happens in just a short while at the racetrack LOL>.

Later on at the paddock a guy came up and told me that his bike had been leaking coolant just before I cam around..(They were cleaning it up when the ambulance driver gave me a ride back to the paddock. I will never know for sure whether it was my own stupid fault or whether I hit that coolant on the track.. One thing for sure.. The back end sure seemed to come around fast...! No warning NO way to compensate I just launched in the air then tumbled around for a while. Thanks to my great Pilot leathers and Shoei RF1100 helmet no major issues.. It REALLY pays to wear the best equipment you can..

Life is just too short to sit around and watch sports on TV blah blah .... Get out and actually DO SOMETHING Exciting.. ! Get your juices flowing.. and really have something to talk about when you get older..

Glad you are OK Speedy..

Thanks my friend.. It was just getting fun when it stepped out on me..:(

However the Gyro Cam is awesome. I cant wait to get back on track and get some real lap times in.. But first I will need new leathers Helmet and gloves. Not to mention fixing up the bike and healing up myself LOL..

Oh well.. sometimes you've got to crash to find out how fast you CAN'T go LOL.

Few things:

1.) So glad to hear you are alright. Bikes are cheap, your health is what is important.

2.) that Gyrocam is ....... awesome. I want one.

3.) I hate to be the back-seat racer here, but at 4:17 you can hear exactly what caused the highside. You quickly picked up the throttle with a ton of lean angle left.

Good to hear you faired ok and the bike had only minor damage. Hopefully your back out on the track soon.

Sorry to hear that speedy. Glad you're ok!

Good to hear you got the bike running the way it should, but why is that white gixxer 1000 walking away like that on the back straight, or it seemed anyways. Must be a full race bike or you weren't pushing it cuz you stayed with him in the corners.

Heal up quick.

Ps love the gyro cam!

Glad you're okay and sounded a lot like my recent experience wadding my s1000rr up except it was all my fault. Watching the video versus what I remember happening is amazing. I remembered things that never happened.

I don't know the track, but apparently you went in wide. Missed the apex wide. Latter part of the bend opening throttle, you tried to get back into correct line. So turning in even tighter and opening at the same time. Obvious result is a highsider.

But lesson to learn there, keep it wide into the end of the corner and get back into correct line in the next straight. I've done my share of the stupid mistakes, after bruises have healed in and wallet back into shape, they're memories which I would not give away. Life is for living!

Ps, the tarmac doesn't look great to me, a lot of black bitumen patches. Aren't they slippery?

I'm believing the coolant on the track thing . You can see the guy in front of you slid from the inside to the outside . and I think so did speedy .

Best crash write up ever! To Nola's comment, maybe he got off as soon as he realized, but had already mader 4 laps. I can't believe any serious rider would continue riding, even if alone for fear of damage to his bike.

In the video, as the bike is lying there in the grass idling, it's almost like it's saying "Com'on, get back on, let's do some more racing - heeeeellllooooo? Where are you???? " lol
