WSBK Change To Gridding Procedure in race Two:

Big Change To Gridding Procedure For Future World Superbike Races

"2. The formation of the grid for Race 2 will now be decided following race results from Saturday. Superpole results will continue to define starting positions for riders who finished in 10th position or lower, however the front of the grid will now be determined on Race One results.

The front three rows will be affected in the following way:

-- Top three riders move back to row three and see 1st and 3rd reverse their positions.

-- Riders who finished in 4th, 5th and 6th will be promoted to the front row.

-- Riders who finished in 7th, 8th and 9th will start from the second row."

This has got to be some kind of a joke or early april fools thing .

I honestly thought it was an April fools article being circulated as well. Until I saw RRW post it. I see what they are trying to do for entertainment value, but I would have gone the direction of the BSB rules maybe. But their series, they can do what they want. I'll still watch until they ad a Joker lane.

I don't like it. It's like punishing the winners. Might as well start them at the back of the grid for entertainment.

I read the article at least three times because I could not, and still do not, understand why they think Rea, Davies and Sykes need to be penalized and pushed back to the third row in race 2 after finishing the races in first, second and third in race 1. See how needlessly convoluted that sounds??? I like the way BSB does it. Fastest lap in race 1 gets the pole in race 2.

Oh yeah, fourth place in race #1 is rewarded with pole in race #2.

Its ridiculous, they must been in the pub all afternoon to have come up with this half baked idea. WSBK must really be suffering.

Hmmm, why are you guys so upset? These WSBK gov guys are the same ones who are responsible for rules like "at least you have to put printed foils that look like head lights on your bike"...

I think the changes are 3 fold. Whether, it works or not is anyone's guess. But, this formula has been used with varying levels of success in other racing formats. The most successful IMO being the British Touring Car series.
1. Increase viewer entertainment value.
Watching the same three riders lead virtually every lap of every race gets old quick. By moving them back a few rows, viewers get to see more passing and a more exciting race.
2. Increase sponsorship.
Riders 4 - 9 rarely get any TV air time (at least for a last couple of years anyway). By moving them up front in race two, allows those team/rider sponsors to get a little air time for their investment which should help teams keep or attract new sponsorship.
3. More competitive championship
This change makes pulling off double win weekends a bit more challenging, which should lead to more riders being in the title fight.

I think it will lead to more turn one crashes as the faster riders clearly rush to get back to the front.

You guys might want to give it a shot. It may not have a huge impact at all as we've seen Davies start from row three several times and lead or be second by they time they exist turn one.

You're probably right, which begs the question - why? It's almost as pointless as the aforementioned headlight stickers.

Yeah I'll give ya that one. The stickers were just plain ridiculous! As to why, I've shared my opinion as to why in a post above but, it's anyone's guess really.

I actually like the rule of having the headlight decals on the bikes. You have to remember the adage, "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday". Bike manufacturers are in racing so they can develop their products and sell units, but that can be a challenge if spectators have difficulty recognizing one bike from another in the field. Even, though it is a small detail, the decals help a lot in identifying whether the racer is on is a ZX10, G-SXR, Aprilia, etc. Also, to those who don't understand all the modifications needed to take a road bike to a race bike, can easily think, "I just need to buy a GSX-R1RSVduc, and I can ride like that!"

It may sound dumb to a racing fan, but also racing organizations aren't really worried about attracting you, because you are already a fan. They want to attract new people and increase viewership, which increases revenue.

This new WSBK rule is proof that it is all about the show and not about the racers. It is not a rule I like.

Totally agree. Lots of people bitched about the 2 day race format at the end of 2015 for the 2016 season and it was a huge success. Atleast see how it goes before slamming it.

Anything that leads to more competitive racing has to be great for the spectators.......us.

I've travelled around Europe for multiple rounds each year since the early 90s.
I didnt attend a single race this year after they changed to the multiple day format,
due to the extra costs and time off work needed for the spread out program.
I'm sure I cant be the only one who was pissed off with it.
