1299 Wheelie Control

Hi,

Tomorrow I am picking up my 1299S with only 1500KMS . I am coming off a 1199S however My questions is .
1299 Wheelie control how does it really work? IF I have it set to 8 highest setting and I pop the clutch will it wheelie? Or is wheelie control mainly for Power wheelies on hard acceleration .

When it’s cranked up, engine power is limited so much it probably won’t pop up even using the clutch up approach. It definitely won’t power wheelie.
Mines on 1 so it still gives plenty of raw power but if I get up too high, it limits power to bring U down.

u can turn traction and wheelie control off but these bikes are way to powerful for that

Mine also have a full Titanium Akropovic Exhaust , clear clutch cover , and Levers. I'll post up some pics.


Question.... Are you using the Upmap for exhaust or aftermarket tune? Did you notice much difference after exhaust mod?

Bought the bike used with Akra installed. It’s a Ducati Performance “DP” version which comes with the UpMap. It ran ok with the UpMap but it was choppy down low so I bought the BrennTuning handheld tuner and installed a custom flash they sent me. It runs much smoother now.

I’m excited to see some pix and also how your 1299S compares to your 1199.
does ur 1199 have an Akra exhaust?

The only advice I will give you since no one really explained this to me perfectly and I found out the hard way. Our 1299 Panigales whether they are the base, S or R models come with 39T in the rear sprocket. I was debating whether to go up to 42T or 41T. This one dude told me how much he loved having 42T and said the power amazing and that his front would come up occasionally. Me being the ..... I listened to him. My front end was always coming up when I throttled hard, even in 3rd and sometimes 4th gear. At point there was no point even having wheelie launch control LOL. So I went down to a 41T rear sprocket. Off the line if I give it a hard throttle the front end will feather the ground and come down. But it feels great unlike that 42T rear sprocket.

Our 1299 Panigales come with 39T in the rear sprocket.

Mine is totally stock right now and it seems to power wheelie in 1st 2nd and 3rd and again in 4th and 5th if I rev the previous gear out to redline.

I can pull the wheel up in first from 2,500 rpm

Flames come out the exhaust and it sounds and feels like an explosion when I accelerate hard from around 2,500 rpm and upshift between 4,500 and 5,000 rpms

I have the Akra system fitted and ECU tune. It’s a monster



If I decide to keep this bike, stage 2 of the mods are going to be an HM QuickShifter, Factory Pro shift kit and probably a nicer wet clutch. And probably chain & sprockets because it’ll be due. Ducati manual says replace sighing 12,000 miles:

I like ripping through the gears and it’s taking its toll on the QuickShifter module

you know what’s cool too, when the cops hear you speeding around on the Big twin, it doesn’t sound like your racing. Compared to a BMW S1000RR, from a distance it sounds like your racing even if your just going 25 in the neighborhood

I found the wheelie control to be unpredictable on the track and turned it down to the lowest setting.
As far as gearing, I’ve found the 41t rear to be the sweet spot. It’s great on the road and tops out just a few yards before the braking point on the long back straight at COTA.

I'm not sure that the wheelie control is trustworthy, I would not rely on it as it seems to be random. I keep DWC on 1 and that's about right with a 41t sprocket. I have found that if you give it a handful shifting just before redline through all the gears that its pretty easy to keep the front on the deck or floating, but if you have a drop off, a bump or feather the throttle before cracking on in the mid range then you need to be careful.

On the 1299 the 3 setting does not allow wheelies, It it will unload the front. Setting 2 allows small wheelies but will not let them go over a small amount. (Just lift the front). 1 will allow wheelies. I don’t think it matters how you try, clutch vs power if you try and wheelie in the more restricted setting it’ll probably be like hitting a brick wall.

I run in race mode because i like the throttle position mapping with DWC on 1

My charcoal canister didn’t like the power wheelies so that’s out of there now

I hope the feel will be smother with all the advanced electronics on 1299.

Also regarding DWC the the sensor seems to be attuned to being on level pavement. Going down a hill I can bring the front end up without intervention way easier and way higher in relation to the rear wheel then being on flat pavement, so just be aware of your attitude to the horizon to avoid any puckering moments. .

The thing about the Throttle Response that gets to me in Sport is how strange it is. It seems like its pretty responsive when you first crack the throttle then about mid range open on the throttle it seems like you can make huge movements further open but not get much response. Then on mine if you go from about 40-70% to full open suddenly it takes off and has all this power. Its almost like 40-70% of the throttle range in the middle is doing very little then you pin it and suddenly it gets a move on. Mine is like 10-30% Throttle it picks up ok 30-70% feels like you are lugging it then when you go past 70% it takes a second but then suddenly it opens the butterflies I guess.

Race seems much more 1:1 but if you get caught in traffic or need to do some slower stuff it gets to be touchy.

I haven't had any surprises with the DWC yet. I did notice going up hill by my house that it stood up when I gave it the beans but it wasn't violent and it sat right back down. Rest of the time seems like you can pretty much pin it open and its pretty relaxed.

Even in race mode it has some throttle smoothing with the electronics. If you try and throttle blip and do it too fast it doesn’t blip so certain inputs are being filtered out. That’s probably good for a certain rider segment but something I dislike, particularly since I’ve been riding since before fuel injection was a thing on sport bikes. Also, even in race mode the throttle is non-linear so there is a throttle nanny to protect us.
