First off I think it important to mention the amount of ''crap'' that was stuck on the magnetic drain plug = disgusting...

It took a few minutes to get it clean, not sure the dealer would have taken the trouble.

Now for the good news:)

I had done some research on this forum and others about the oil change process, and the general consensus was that the oil filter cartridge cover was a PITA to remove...

Well I'm not sure if this is a new design or if no one noticed but the cap's two bolt holes are threaded. I found two screws that fit (sorta) and it came right out in one solid pull.

I was so excited that I'd found an easy way to remove the cap that I'd forgotten to cover the exhaust. Insert brake cleaner here....

I believe someone mentioned the new ones have the threaded covers like you've discovered. Cool!

They did?

I looked extensively without any luck....

Do you happen to have a link? I'd like to know the exact thread size

thanks for the pic, I was wondering how the new covers looked. That makes it pretty easy to mod the 2012 covers by just tapping a thread into the hole.

Easy way is to drill two small holes perpendicular to the holes in the cover and use picks to pull the thing out. How-to is here: http://ducati1199.com/guides/15246-how-change-oil.html

I've done a few write ups on various Panigale-related mods and maintenance procedures that can be found at: Wrenching ? AntiHero

Thanks AntiH, I had read your how to and it was helpful.

For 2013+ bikes this seems like a lot less hassle.

Also my cover was in there tight, I'm not convinced picks would have gotten it out without possibly taking parts of my fingers with it.

If it is not threaded like im guessing the 12's were not.

A good pair of inside pliers will pull it right out.

Ill find out this week ;) im due for the 600 mile change.

RPM429 1st October - 'Oil Filter Update'. No thread size mentioned. My tech showed me this approach at the first service back in June. Believe size is 8mm but will confirm when I do the winterization next week.

I just did my first oil change also, lots of crap on the magnet, used factory filter, Ducati really went all out to save weight on these bikes, cartridge instead of a canister, aluminum drain plug pocketed to boot. I had to settle for Motul 300V 10/40, right away I noticed my bike didn't shift as nice, and the clutch feel changed.
Next time I will bite the bullet and order the Factory Fill Shell oil.
Took damn near an hour to do the work, next time will be quicker, the whole time I was doing the service I kept thinking of a line from one of my favorite movies, " The ease of others is not the concern of the Sultan" I love my Panigale, it is a no compromise piece of equipment.

You think the bike is WORSE with the 300v? I just did my first service as well with 300v and it's most definitely better than the factory oil IMO

Ok so I did my oil change and told myself not to forget the rag for the filter oil on the exhaust, and of course I had the rag handy, and still forgot.

Foil really is the perfect solution.

My cap was threaded, and I used the passenger footpeg bolts that came with the bike to pull the cover out.

Lucky I had the inside pliers as it pulled the filter out perfectly.

Hey thanks for this thread. It is a million times better than the workshop manual, especially the drilling hole on the cover bit and the foil trick. I just did mine and it didn't take long, but damn Motul V300 is expensive. Twice the price of Motul 5100 that I used for my 848.
That oil does look very nice though! Was very tempted to roll in it and let it soothe my skin.

When I did the first oil change on my R, I had the usual metal on the magnet, but also had a ton of alum shavings in the oil and purple paint flakes!
