Hello everyone! If Ducati would have released a workshop manual for the Monster (or other bikes) which didn't contradict itself maybe we wouldn't have so many oil change posts. Alas, that's not the case, and since even the other posts and videos disagree with each other, I'm not totally sure the best method to proceed. I'll break it down into sections and discuss the information to see if we can come to some certain conclusions!

Oil Filter and Magnetic Drain Plug

First, going through the worksop manual (Found Here), starting on page 127, the filter removal and drain plug removal make sense and agree with all forum posts and videos.

To do this, you need Ducati OEM Oil Filter (Part Number: 444.4.003.9A). This part was first 444.4.003.7A (mentioned in some posts Like this), but was since superseded by 444.4.003.8A, which was thereafter superseded by 444.4.003.9A. This took some searching, but ultimately I determined that the "9A" revision is the correct version from this post and can be purchased at ducati Omaha.

Additionally, you need a new copper washer for the magnetic drain plug (Part Number: 85250421A) which can be purchased at ducati Omaha.

Per the manual, you run the engine until you are at temperature. Then, remove the magnetic drain plug, let the oil drain and clean the magnetic shavings. Reposition the drain plug with the new copper washer and torque to 20 Nm with a 5mm hex socket. Then, remove the filter, fill the new filter with oil, and oil the filter gasket. Then refit the filter and torque to 11 Nm.

Again, the shop manual agrees with all posts and videos up to this point! So... that's great. Here is where things get weird.

Mesh Filter Removal and Cleaning

Now, have read that some people don't reccomend cleaning the mesh filter at all, and Ducati recommends cleaning it every other oil change. As I have a used Monster 821, I have to only assume the break in service was done, but I'm not sure how many oil changes were done or if the mesh filter was ever cleaned. As I'm just past 5k miles, I want to clean it.

The mesh filter plug, mesh filter, intake service plug, and associated gaskets must be removed, cleaned, and replaced. The forums, videos, and ducati workshop manual disagree here. To start, I will define the parts and their locations as that has lacked some clarity in other posts. For example, I believe the mesh filter plug is referred to as the "Bung" in this excellent post.

Per the Ducati manual
Part 5 is the Mesh Filter Plug
Part 6 is the mesh filter plug seal (Part Number: 85250051A for purchase at ducati Omaha)
Part 7 is the Mesh Filter
Part 8 is the Intake Service plug
Part 9 is the Intake service plug seal (Part Number: 22032083A for purchase at Ducati Omaha)

First, remove the exhaust mid pipe. Then remove the mesh filter plug (5) with a 14mm hex and remove the seal. This allows access to the mesh filter (7) and remove it. Clean with gasoline and then dry.

Next, loosen the intake service plug (8) with a 12mm hex, remove it, and remove the seal. This is the first worry.

This intake service plug is apparently secured in place with LOCK 5 (alternative product is Loctite 271, which is a permanent thread locker). If that's true, the plug, and the plug threads in the engine case will have residual Loctite requiring cleaning. I have not read about this in the forums, seen it in videos, or read about it in the manual. Perhaps that just means it's not required and I'm being paranoid. OK.

Next, you replace the mesh filter (7). The Ducati manual calls for lubricating the mesh filter threads with GREASE A (which is Shell Gadus S2 V100 3). No videos have referenced this, and I have not read it in other forum posts. I'm not really sure what to do here. I would be inclined to believe the Ducati manual, though the next parts make me hesitant to trust it as they may not be referring to their parts, greases, and loctites properly. The Ducati manual calls for torquing the mesh filter to 42 Nm. As these threads are plastic, I find this hard to believe. This post asserts 10 Nm which is repeated in several other locations, but THIS post agrees with the 42 Nm. I'm inclined to torque to 10 Nm, but again there is still the issue of the grease.

After that, reinstall the mesh filter plug and seal and torque to 42 Nm. This is agreed upon by all videos, forum posts, and the manual.

Next, the manual calls for greasing the threads of the intake service plug, placing the intake service plug seal in the hole, and then torquing the 25 Nm. This directly contradicts what I've read about this thread getting LOCK 5 (Loctite 271). Additionally, the image in the service manual shows the image of GREASE A and LOCK 5, indicating that the manual incorrectly mentioned one of the two grease steps. The torque of 25 Nm disagrees with this post, which calls for 42 Nm, so I'm not sure what to go with here, and if I should put Loctite 271 on it for reassembly. Then there is this post which seems to have corrected some of the torque mishaps of Ducati manuals, which agrees well for the most part, though it also claims 42 Nm for the intake service plug seal torque and includes LOCK5.

Additionally, the video I've referenced here can be found at this link.

In conclusion, the main info that is not exactly clear and agreed upon is the following:
1.) Mesh filter installation torque (though its very likely 10 Nm)
2.) Mesh filter installation grease/no grease
3.) intake service plug torque
4.) intake service plug Loctite

Please let me know what you all are thinking! Or if there is a new manual that solves all of these questions.
