I recently sold my Diavel and I'm looking at the Panigale (a couple others too but not relevant). I can test ride all of the potential bikes except for the 1199s. I found one for 18k new. Since I can't go for the 1299s would the price and s model upgrades be a better choice over the 1299? I'm definitely looking for any opinions. I always test ride before buying so in this situation I needed input I can't find for myself.

If you really want to test ride a 1199s come up to Philly to Fast By Ferracci they still have their 1199s demo. Well, I rode the 1299s. While it won't make my upgrade my new 1199 base model. I did feel that if I didn't have one yet I would get the 1299s. But if you are doing track and street the base model 1299 would be your golden ticket.

I may see if I can make that trip since it's about 3 hours away. I'd definitely be using it for both since I live about 5 minutes from Summit Point. Since you rode both versions, in your opinion, is the increased midrange and overall HP change that much of difference? I'm assuming it wasn't since you're not considering an upgrade.

If you like torque and midrange power that will stomp just about anything on the road, 1299 base. It's a big difference, check the reviews on line.

I am a mere mortal so I did not notice the midrange increase or hp difference. But, I know it is there and the 1299 is as smooth as glass around town, putting along roads and hellfire and snot rockets when you twist the throttle, it is very refined yet still a lunatic, whereas the 1199 is a lunatic all the time. If you come up to ride the 1199s lmk and I'll meet you there.

Thanks, I'll Definitely let you know if I set up a ride. Tomorrow I'm headed to Battleys to check out the 1299 and the s1000rr. My last 2 bikes were Ducati so I'll probably end up with another one but I didn't want to rule anything out just yet.

I'd get the 1299 also. Bigger displacement and the electronics. The wheels and suspension are cheap to get used.

Post 9 you said it feels like the 1299 pulls much harder (because it does, by all accounts)

No replacement for displacement when it comes to torque output

I did and it does, but I was giving him as in did it drop me back into the bike shove my eyes into my socket feeling difference type of answer. But I also told him what i said in there my choice not having one would be the 1299.

S1000RR is a great bike but it's all top end and didn't feel as nimble/agile to me. The 1299 feels like a 600 with a stump puller engine - it's addicting. Also as shilling has mentioned, most of the power is the last 1/4 turn of the throttle. Ride it easy and it's not scary.

Fourth gear rolls against cars are comical.

I would hold out and wait for incentives on the 1299s

That's how I got a deal on a brand new left over 1199S.

OP, if you don't mind waiting, you can get a deal on a left over 1299S around this time next year. If not, go 1299 Base.

I think there's something to be said for the 1199s, especially in black! The bike is thinner and lighter and I always felt mine was easier to control where I live - which is lower in the rev range ;) I have a 1299s now (I had an 1199 base) and it feels to me like it turns in quicker but is a much bigger bike. Maybe that's just my perception, though, because it's wider front and back? The 1299 is a hella more powerful, that's for sure. But if you need more power than the 1199 then you should be happy jumping up from World Superbike to MotoGP, and all your bikes should be one-offs from the factory team.

I appreciate all of the advice guys. To answer some questions, I live in in WV/MD area and riding seasons are a precious commodity so I'd rather go with sooner than later, if possible. I'm stuck with a 21-22k otd price or I'd just go with the 1299s. I can't deny the allure of the S options with the suspension, wheels and steering damper which is a cost that I couldn't get past the wife until next season. So that leaves me with determining whether the heart of the beast, so to speak, is worth going the base route. So far I've heard it makes the 1199 look weak by comparison as well as not a huge difference and with an exhaust and tune you can reach baseline 1299 numbers.

Of course, I think part of this is the insanity that waiting causes. Thanks for indulging in my ocd lol

1299 - its simply a much better bike. In fact, I can't quite believe how much better it is, the low down torque and mid range is amazing compared to the 1199.

Ran both bikes today and I definitely wouldn't go with the 1199 at this point since the 1299 seems lacking in the traditional vtwin Ducati torque. Got a killer deal on both the s1000 and the 1299s which doesn't make things any easier lol.

Troubles of bike shopping... No complaints here :)

I think you meant to say the 1199 is lacking the traditional Vtwin Ducati torque

What's your price on the S?

You're right thanks for the correction... Whenever I type or say Twin for some reason it always comes out with V-Twin.

I had the 1198sp and yes, the 1299 still lacks in low down grunt of the older bikes, to include the 1098. You're not going to flip the bike over in first gear at a redlight if you give too much gas. You may do it in first gear at 9k if you grab a handful. Still a great bike though, I enjoyed riding it.

I got an OTD price of 24.5 for the 1299s and 17.5 OTD for the BMW minus the forged rims.
