1299 base model for Daily Commute?!

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I've been riding my 2016 1299s for 70 miles per day in Washington DC traffic for the last few months and can echo the crowd:
- there are "better" commuter bikes (meant for commuting)
- there is no justifiable need for the "s"
- you are likely going to love it
- you are likely to arrive at your destination happier than had you taken any other form of transportation

But really, stop trying to justify it. A superbike isn't a rational decision. An Italian superbike is an even less rational decision.

The only caveat I'll add is the 1299s is so much more machine than I will ever be able to handle, and that's good because it saves me from myself.
- Some ...... jumps in front of you and slams on breaks while you were trying to get into the lane? ABS, monster brakes, and sticky tire mean you didn't rear-end the guy even though you grabbed front & slammed rears.
- Thought you were cute and dropped two gears and ripped throttle like it was a 600? She kindly reminds you that you are in over your head and keeps the front wheel down.

Remember, it's only as fast as your wrist says so.

Thanks. I see you ride a 1299s. How would you compare the two in terms of 90% road and 10% track?

They are both great commuter bike but they both will roast your nuts - May cause testicle cancer I reckon.

Both our bikes roast our butts and groin sadly, but the riding positions are really comfortable.

I don't do track days but the S has stiffer suspension.

I would like some experience based input on the base model 1299.

Currently, I'm riding an XDiavel S but made the mistake of testing a Panigale 959 for a few days. Man, the Panigale is awesome. I rode it on twisty back roads, on the highway, in the city and sat in traffic. It was really great to be able to test all these different conditions after reading reviews about people saying how it has flaws in various departments. The biggest issue, I experienced which has been mentioned broadly, was the heat issue. But for me that's not a problem since I ride in leathers.

The 959 is great in my experience. However, I'd like a bit more power than what the 959 can provide. While the 959 has plenty of speed, I'd like some more 'oomph' - and I'm guessing the 1299 will do that.
Here's my question: The base model is within my budget. The S is not. Some people mention how the S model is needed for commute since it means riding on uneven surface etc. Also, some say that the chassis is so stiff so that you need to make up for that in suspension. A problem which some say requires new suspension all together for riding on road and track. Is that your experience?

Would the base model be fine as a daily commuter on uneven roads or should I wait another year and save up for an S model?

You could easy commute on the base or the S.
I would recommend a few things if you going for the base.
After playing the failing rebound, compression and leaking seals game with the marzocchi's.
1. Replace the seals and put a cartridge kit in the the forks. I went Ktech.
2. With the 1199 I went for tune boy which fixed the surging(rough running) down low and the heat issue to some degree.
3. Throttle spacers to remove the free play.
4. The shock is low rent. Replacement is not compulsory but while fixing the forks I went for the Ktech shock. Noticeable change in the ride quality.
5. I didn't like the comfort seat,in my opinion it put more weight on your wrist and made it harder at lights as I was on the balls of my feet. I modify the race seat to replace the slippery hard as wood standard seat.

Hasn't happened yet with the 1299. 1199 owners always come on here and say it will happen with the 1299 base forks, but yet to be seen.
