Anyone had the 1299 base model on track yet? I struggled with setting the rear up at Anglesey today and wrecked a tyre

Did you have a suspension tuner with you?

To be honest, there so SO many variables that even if several people did have theirs on track, they likely wouldn't be able to help.

Which tires were you on (brand, compound)?
What is your pace?
Track surface?
Track temps?
Ambient temps?
Air pressures?
Spring rates?
Have you altered the geometry?

So on and so forth. To get the best results, it would better to find someone who can work with you at the track. Make changes, test them, make more, try again, etc.

Hi I'm usually front of the intermediate / back of fast group pace but was learning the bike and setting it up so probably a little slower yesterday. It was also freezing and damp.

I was working with the suspension guy at the track who set sag & geometry etc and we ended up with the rebound damping fully in.

Everything is stock so the spring weight is probably a little soft for me but I was just shocked (no pun intended) to have reached the end of the adjustment with the sachs so soon

To me it looks like typical "haven't been riding for a while" rip increased with no tyre warmers. And most likely weight too far in the back.

1. Because bike is new, you wait too long from the apex and then nail all the power in when bike is almost upright. Serious punishment for the tyre.
2. This is increased because apparently there are no tyre warmers, further increasing the "wait" after apex.
3. This is really hard to say, but usually if the first two are there, rider is cautious and self protection mode between ears straightens hands and rider weight is too far back.

Rebound fully in is also strange to my ear. It is a normal Sachs shock, which means that rebound adjustment is limiting and affecting oil flow in both directions (comp/reb). All in means that everything goes only through shims. Suspension is very unsensitive on both directions. This causes more stress to the rear tire as well.

Good call. After looking at the rear tire again you can see how the throttle was applied hard, after the bike was picked up (off the edge of the tire)...instead of gradually rolling on the gas from apex.

Cheers for the ideas, I was using warmers so pretty sure it's not cold tear. I agree that I wasn't getting on the gas when leant fully over due due it being my first track day on it. But I also wasn't gassing it hard enough to cause that sort of wear so soon.

Other than the wear I actually got it handling pretty good! But it will cost a for turn in tyres!

How much do you weigh with gear? What static and rider sag front and rear were you running?

The shocks on the base models are useless, have you considered changing that to an after market Ohlins? I did that and it transformed my bike.

I am about 16st. yes Il be getting an aftermarket down the line I am just hoping to get the best out of the standard one for now.

I cant remember the sag of the top of my head but it was set by the suspension guy at the track.

How was the ohlins to set up?

That is a strong statement. I've not ridden 1299 base. But last year I had 899. Suspension is not sensitive, they feel a bit sticky. But with race tires I was able to take over club level racers with fully built S1000RR Beemers.

So I would not use a word useless. There are better components for sure. For me the 1299s is about 1second/km faster than 899, both being stock. With 1299 I am 1,3s/km off from SBK (built with IDM regulation) lap record driven by Vesa Kallio (former WSS competitor). (lap times in Alastaro Circuit SBK record 1.18,355, me with stock S1000RR 1.22,17, 899 1.24,7 - I guess I will do a low 1.22 with 1299s, maybe even high 1.21)

Bit the bullet and gone for one of these, hopefully should sort the rear - once I work out how to hold the bike up to install it

Model # and cost? Let us know how you like it. Base model with Ohlins rear shock is still much cheaper than S and most seem to think the fork is pretty good

That was exactly my thinking it's about 5k for some ohlins and a carbon mudguard on the s. I went for the ttx mk1 (du930) as I got a good deal. £800 whereas the new mk2 is about £1250. Probably won't get back on track till mid June to try it out but il keep you posted

If you think that a carbon mud guard and Ohlins are the only things on the S, you missed a couple of other features.

Not saying that those are or aren't justifiable to all, but that statement of a mud guard and some springs being the only things is inaccurate.

Are those the SP's? If, so should you even be running a warmer on them? I thought being more of a road tyre and not race they do not need warmers as they'd heat up quickly since the carcas is much thinner and flexes more.
