Any luck yet in finding the exact cause [emoji106]

Still waiting to hear back from the dealer. They had to get an authorization signed by Ducati in order to take the motor apart.

Riding tail of the Dragon for the next couple days on a Hyper939 SP so going to let them do their thing over the week end and reach out next week if I don't hear back.

Stay tuned for updates.

Alright. I received the highly anticipated verdict phone call from the dealer today (GP Bikes).

They opened the motor and it was completely grenaded. From the vertical cylinder's con rod through to bearings and beyond. It's thought that the initial cause was somehow oil starvation (not sure how) but its inconclusive.

Upon looking into rebuild costs, parts alone were in excess of $20,000 CDN (labor would have been on top of that).

So....(drum roll please): they decided to put a brand new crate motor in it. That's probably the best outcome I could have hoped for. No questions asked and the entire ordeal was dealt with very professionally.

The only bad news is that 1) it's going to take 3 weeks to get the crate motor here from Italy and 2) I'm gunna have to break the bike in all over again when I get it back (don't feel to bad for me though).

Couple things:

1) Really appreciate everyone here's support and opinions/advice. There were some dark and uncertain times and just knowing there are ppl rootin' for ya made a difference.

2) For all the horror stories we may have heard collectively about Ducati warranty and dealerships, my experience here with a very serious issue was handled in an exemplary way and I'm a loyal Ducati customer for life because of it.

Great outcome, enjoy the scenery during the running in period as it'll just be the usual blur when you get past 600 miles :)

Yes excellent news. Man I can't believe what they charge for a motor. I thought the cost would have come down a bit over time.

Given the situation, having to wait however long it takes for your new engine to arrive is an awesome problem to have. Glad they took care of you. This outcome isn't always the case.

Enjoy

ha....I was just at GP bikes today, walking around drooling. definitely the best motorcycle dealership in Ontario, probably all of Canada.

How much was the engine from Italy? Just wondering if I ever have to go down that path.

Nice! Great outcome!

I was going to ask if you'd checked the oil level as they like to use that as an excuse for denying coverage...but I wouldn't want that info (if it had been neglected) out in public-

They didn't mention what the cost of a crate motor is but they did say that the rebuild would have been $20K (retail) in parts, plus labour.

If I were to guess, the crate motor would need to be in the $15-$20K range.

Anyhow, I'm just relieved and grateful and do not wish this on anyone else.

The sound that thing made when it threw the connecting rod will haunt me for a long time...

You could ask for the old motor back and check the bearings yourself.

Also could part it out on eBay or here.

If they are dropping a new engine in it for free under warranty you should be doing the happy dance. I know I would. Lol

I do about 2,000 miles a year and change my oil at the end of the season, so I almost never check it. I'm out of warranty so I will more often, but if a engine under warranty has oil starvation, I'd be surprised if it was anything other than a design flaw.

This is great news!!
