1299's smoking during start up?

When I picked my bike up, I rode 170+ miles in one shot, stopping only once for gas in the middle, then took a 20 minute break for coffe and a snack, then turned around and did the reverse journey; that obviously allowed the engine and exhaust to get up to temperature, go through a few cycles, stabilize, get hot, get cool and generally break in.

Peak rpm?

I wouldn't call a 20 minute stop full cool down/heat cycle, but whatever works. I prefer short trips with complete cool down (as in, overnight) for break-in

This is why "break in for x miles" is not the full story.

One thing they might have fixed is the hard start or shut off. I haven't experienced it yet with the 1299.
Before I took delivery, I had the tech remove the charcoal canister... Didn't even want to deal with the issues the 1199 had due to that.

I rode up HWY 1 in Northern, CA. Nothing but twisties the whole way, with a few straights. Mostly 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear, with a few blasts up to 5th on the longer straights. After the first tank of gas, I took it up to 11,000 rpm (the master mechanic at my dealership told me to do it that way.. He also told me to accelerate up the hills and then snap the throttle off .. he think the rings seat better that way).

I rode the bike exactly as I would normally; gave it some serious gas, attacked the corners, got on the throttle hard coming out of corners, braked fairly hard (but not track hard), trail braked... Generally wanted to learn as much as I could about the bike on the first day of ownership.

Tried out as many of the settings as I could.. ABS, TC, DWC, suspension settings etc. For the twisties and my commute, I am running ABS at 2, TC at 3, DWC at 2, with the up/down paddles controlling the DWC.

Cheers.

You'll have to update your thread on how well the S suspension is working in the twisties

Wait....did anyone READ Shilling's post? Dude, you are a Beast! Kudos to a real rider! Had your bike for what....maybe a few weeks and you logged over 1000 miles? I haven't even registered my bike yet and had it for almost a month. Your Badass Dude..I love it! :)

You can do 1000 miles in 4 days easily

I've got two weeks from when I pick up the bike until my first track day. I plan on having 1500 miles on the bike before the first track day.

i have had it for two weeks as of yesterday... Like I said in another post, I have been riding since I was 7 years old and commuting by motorcycle since I was 17... That means I have been commuting every day for 36 years.. lucky for me, the SF Bay Area is an all year round motorcycling paradise, if you can deal with some rain, a few weeks of sub zero temperatures and a bit of fog and wind.

I put 53,000.+ miles on my BMW S1000RR in a little over 3 years, that included around 50-60 track days.

Cheers.

my doesn't have any smoke but i noticed a burning smell at 400 miles anyone else get any funny smells

I'm pretty sure it was oil, that's what it was on the 1199's. Until the rings got seated in at least. Some did some had nothing.

The ones who said they had no smoke were telling fibs. Mine smoked like a chimney.

Agreed.

I have taken multiple trips that were 900-1000mi in a day (granted, there was a lot of Interstate riding in there).

But as far as "twisty" riding, when I first get a new bike I will rack up 250-350 miles per day, especially for the first couple of weeks to get used to it and play with everything. Then I race prep it.

And that is all "joy riding". I don't commute to work or anything like that. All the bike miles I do are either purely for fun, coaching or racing.

Got my first puff of smoke out of the R yesterday. But it seemed more like unburnt fuel as I started it, it cut out after maybe 20 secs. Then smoked on re-start, but only that once. Nothing else before or since.

I did put in another thread on here, not sure how true it is, but as I understood it the oil used for running in is a lot less viscous than that used for normal running. This gets changed for a heavier oil at first service that then is less likely to cause any smoking as it doesn't find its ways past ring and seals like the lighter fluid?

This video is the first fire on my 'R. It smoked like this only this one time. I rode almost the entire first few hundred miles accellerating as close to WOT as I could without attracting too much attention from very low RPM up through 10,000 RPM and then closed throttle with EBC OFF back down through the revs. Seats the rings and other bits quite nicely I'm told. This bike barely sips any oil even when flogging on the track. :)

1199 had big smoke until 10'000 km (only during start up)...

New 1299 no smoke (1'500 km yet)

Have my bike for the past 3 weeks and I did notice after it started up it puffs a bit of smoke. Kinda like my 1199s used to. Blip the throttle and it puffs some more but goes away.
