I have a 12 1199 triclore. The running tailight is working but the brake light does not work from either lever. I pulled the rear off and there is the one 3 wire connector going to the lights. I made sure it was seated well, could not get in unplugged and didnt want to break the connector. I checked all fuses and they are all good.

Is this a usual issue and will I just have to replace the tail light assembly?

Most probably its a problem with the tail light. It could also be the wiring harness or the BBS.
Easiest way to find out is to connect the tail light directly to a 12Vdc battery. There are three pins. Connect the middle pin to ground (connecting cable is black). the other two pins to +12Vdc. One pin is for the rear light, the other for the brake light.

If rear light turns on, but brake light doesn't, your tail light has gone and you are obliged to send me the defect part for further inspection while buying another new or a used one on Ebay.

If both lights work, check the wiring harness (which is pretty simple). Printout your bike's schematics (users manual, one of the last pages) and take out the harness of your bike. It can be removed completely without problems. Take a multimeter and "beep out" all lines.

If wiring harness seems to be okay, you'll need an oscilloscope and some resistors to check the BBS. I hope this is not the problem, otherwise I am glad to guide you thru the a bit complicate test procedure.

once you finish your diagnosis

I am having this same issue. What was the resolution?

get a new tail light. cheap and easy to replace. might even be able to find used ones or aftermarket.

sell your defective brake light since there are folks out there who want this assembly but don't light up properly.

happened to me....
