2012 Ducati 1199 Dyno Benchmark

The innovative Superquadro engine, so called because of its massively over-square bore and stroke ratio, has increased power to an absolute production twin-cylinder milestone of 195hp and torque to 98.1 lb-ft (13.5kgm) with user-friendly Riding Modes that deliver that power appropriate to the rider's style and environment.

Its construction has enabled a radical reduction in overall vehicle weight and, further identifying Ducati's constant pursuit of performance perfection, major services have been extended to 24,000km (15,000 miles).

Same motor in all 3 configurations so power output is the same no matter which bike you get, but I want to see some dyno numbers from someone other than Ducati!

yeah me too.....i'm looking at selling my 1098r to buy an 1199, i'll be rather annoyed if the new engine doesn't come thru

most guys will go for chasis dyno pretty hard to make a comparison to ducati's hp/torque curve chart unless they had also claim on the transmission losses with some %. hard to imagine that Ducati could benefit any if they would sent their motor to a "2nd party" to verify on its claim.:D

nevertheless, we believe this will be a beast to ride....no mortal whom have own the 1098/1198 complain about the lack in engine performance...

i think maybe that's why more electronics aid + fall-back system if the 1199 is too overwhelming in unexpected events...

If I remember correctly , my first sportbike ( 91 GSXR750 ) had 91 HP ! LOL ! This bike is going to be insane !

The hp is impressive indeed, but the torque at 98.1 is even more impressive to me!

I'm an engineer with America's largest defense contractor (fyi we aren't allowed to say the company name in public forums) and have spent some time looking at the engineering specs (as much is available anyway) and have reached the conclusion that the engineering objectives have been reached with a really well engineered design...glad to see chains vs belts and gears for the cams, along with the way over square design and how they have handled large cam durations with the Fuel induction systems to make it well mannered enough to sell as a street bike and pass EPA muster. I also really like the oiling system, looks completely nominal to me. I can see how this base engine design in non EPA specs (read SBK race specs) will gain considerable HP over the streetable (read EPA specs)...basically it looks pretty close to a GP speced engine to me, albeit a 2 cyl. version. The best 2 cyl engine I have ever seen. At 20 lbs less than the 1198 and 25 hp more and with a considerably higher redline in which to use it, I expect the 1199 to be a world beater. Anywho my 2 cents.

Just thought of this...since the exhaust is different between the Tri Color and the standard/S...would it be right to assume the 195 HP was with the Tri Color (i.e racing) exhaust? And if so where does that leave the standard/S models HP rating out of the crate? I've got 1199 on the brain now...I've seen this before and know where it ends (watchout savings account:)

@2012Ducati1199...my first go fast street scooter was the Kawasaki '72 H2-750, chambered, ported and 34MM mikunis...never had it dynoed but the word was those mods were good for around 120HP and at around 425 lbs dry it was like being on a 750cc motocross bike...all I know is I never got beat (used to eat Z1's for a snack) and it would do one hell of a power wheelie at 110 mph, all these years later reading how dangerous the handling was I'm always struck with how happy I always was with the handling...the 1199 is under 400 lbs dry and goes 195ish...this is going to be so cool.

Hey usrodeo5, I didn't know Disney World was a defense contractor? :):)

Just kidding! Nice write up on the engine. It does look like a quite impressive engine. I just can't wait to ride it.

Don't be fooled by that 195HP number. In the real world, on a real dyno with numbers gathered at the rear wheel, the number will be more like about 160HP.
The 1198 puts out about 140 to 145 on a dyno. I think Ducati claims 175 for the 1198.

I really doubt the numbers will get anywhere near the BMW. Ducati is well known for how far they inflate their claims...

What counts is how the bike feels when you ride it - and that's why Ducati keeps selling bikes

Negative Sir! All the Ducati 1198's we dyno are always areound the 158 to 160hp mark stock.

Below is a link to Akrapovic website where they show a before and after on a stock 1198 at 157hp

EVOLUTION EXHAUST SYSTEM for the DUCATI 1198S - Akrapovi

That Akro number absolutely kicks the 1098's ....

It all depends on how you got your dyno set up and how you use correction factors.
I'll stand by my guess of around 160, maybe up to 170 for the 1199 until the numbers have been run a few times.
Just don't expect anything in the 180-190 range - you'll be disappointed.

i just my KTM RC8R on the Dyno 2 weeks ago , KTM claims around 180-185 with Akra fitted mine came out at 156 at the rear wheel , guy said his dyno reads about 3-4% lower than the Dynojet than the other place up the road

so 160-170 at the rear wheel for the 1199 if they are claiming 190 sounds about right :-}}

In Oct my 1198 produced 160hp on Ducshops dyno. The bike had a Microtech ECU and a Termi full system. A well set up 1098R can routinely produce 179HP.

In my conversation with Troy Bayliss he indicated that the 1199 was basically the same HP as the last full on Superbike he raced. He then went out and matched and then later bettered his Superbike times on a super stock spec 1199. With a blue print of the motor and the Termi full system the bike should produce 205HP but it will be interesting for sure.

Last year I was at Boulder Motorsports getting a tune on one of my bikes. While in the dyno room we perused the files of past runs from all sorts of different bikes.
There was a stock 1098 that produced 133HP, and there was a full race prepped 1098R that BMS built and was pushing 197HP, along with just about everything in between.

Bikes can be built to incredible spec if you have the money and the desire.
But I don't care about that, I only care about how the bike rides and performs for me both on the street and at an occasional track day.

Funny thing, for me personally I'd rather have more power and more torque on the street where there are so many variables. (and I like to goof around)
On the track I just need a smooth reliable power delivery, torque is not important.

We'll see what number turns out for the production 1199, but if ALL of Ducati's past bikes are any indication, the panigale will fall WAY short of the claimed number on a wheel Dyno.
