Well, here we go. This morning at around 6am I started my 36mi commute from the suburbs into Washington DC. About 8 miles in, the bike went bananas.

This was my first experience with a major issue on the bike (I mean, it's got 2k commuter miles on it).

If you haven't experienced it, when the "Can-Line" error starts, all hell breaks loose. Pretty much every indicator on the LCD blinks, the turn signals do their own thing, even the headlight decides to turn on, turn off, flash at weird intervals... which is all something special if you're riding before the sun is up.

All of the rider aids seem to be disabled; RPM gauge becomes non-functional, ABS & all the Dxx functions seems to get disabled, and the bike feels very "raw."

Pulled over, tried the old "turn it off & on again" (I work in tech, so this seemed like a reasonable solution). No such luck. I was able to limp it back home, but it was not a pleasant experience.

Guess I'll be calling the dealer when they open, and maybe pushing it to the front of the neighborhood and calling roadside assistance?

Here's a terrible video of the LCD; it was really hard to get the phone to read the screen, but I wanted to have this for the dealership / Ducati anyway:

After a bit of searching, it seems like it's just an electrical issue, but still... if folks were dealing with this in 2013, how is it still an issue?

Standard fix is to clean the BBS connector plug although I've never had an issue with that.

There are only a limited amount of components in the CAN bus so with a bit of checking of each connector you can normally find the issue.
ECU
BBS
Dash
ABS
GPS - I had recently moved this and bent a pin causing the can bus error
E-Lock - not actually sure what this is? ignition??

E-lock is the little thing in front of the fuel tank where you stick the ignition key into. Part of the immobilizer logic. On top of it there's a little RFID antenna takling to the key.

Check your battery connections too. My 13-1199 did the same thing 2 weeks ago and it had me worried something was majorly wrong. I started the bike no problem and let it warm up, rolled it out of the garage and when i dropped the kickstand it shut off and when i went to restart no power at all. Went to get the booster cables and right when i went to connect it the power came back on and she started no problem. Started on my ride with no issues when all of the sudden the tach started to go crazy and lights were flashing and random warnings were lighting up. I almost pulled over when the tach went back to normal. Got to my destination and shut it off and sure enough when i went back to turn it on there was no power. Got a friend to give me a boost and when i went to pull the battery cover off i noticed the negative terminal was barely on and the screw was loose. Felt like a complete moron but i also felt really relieved

Try unplugging the shift sensor. It will turn the cel on but see if the can issue goes away.

Had this twice on my 13 1199S - both times it was water / damp in the connectors - once the BBS connector and the first time the white connector under the rear of the tank. A spray with contact cleaner and all was good again. It also cured my random stalling issue too!

Worth noting that both times it was after washing the bike. It seems water can get into most of these sensitive plugs quite easily.

Hope that helps

Sam

You guys are awesome. Since this is basically a brand new bike (bought in June), I had the dealer come get it & deal with it.

I haven't heard back yet... they were supposed to get to it today. I'm guessing they won't be able to replicate the issue, but at least it's "logged" officially with them and Ducati.

If it goes down like that, I'll look for moisture & try some of the other suggestions just to satisfy my curiosity.

Thanks again!

Had the CAN-LINE issue 2x on my 2013 1199S bike. Both times after heavy monsoon rains. It was the white connectors under the seat. Culprit was the factory alarm. Ripped that out of the bike completely and everything was normal again. Never did like that alarm - glad it is gone for good!!!

I've been through some crazy storms and both my 1199s have been outside for days in nonstop rain and never have had an issue. My guess is pressure washing is the culprit (or like Quest said....an alarm + water).

Check the battery earth, under the battery box, bolted onto the engine with an 8mm head screw. On my race bikes, I run a separate earth lead as well, bolted directly to one of the L/H case bolts, and fit a vibration-proof washer under the bolt head of both screws, just in case...

I'm considering dielectric grease in all the connectors. Although rain is a very rare sight here and I don't usually use water to wash my bike.

Hey all - got my bike back Thursday evening & all is well. They did find some loose connectors at the ECU, and also some moisture in the ECU as you folks suggested.

While they had it, they also noticed oil leaking from a weep hole, which turned out to be around the water pump. Ducati Italy had them take it apart & reseal it. All of this was handled via warranty, so the only cost was the inconvenience of not having my transportation.

3 rides (albeit without rain) and everything is running fine!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

@RetardedTiming - if you don't use water to wash your bike, what do you use? I don't spray jet water onto the bike, but I do use a shower nozzle to rinse it.

Wet microfiber towel and some dry microfiber towels. Throw away the wet one and keep the dry ones.
