2016 Panigale R oil consumption

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

As per the others on here (apart from the bad stuff) it's completely normal to be using oil due to the two ring design. Mine used much the same amount for the first thousand or so miles. It was only really once I'd done 1500 miles and six hard days on track that it has stopped using oil.

DucatiNA wanted a dyno run to calculate oil loss....they pulled it off the dyno "rapidly" as it was making a total mess of things...11ozs (eleven) in 50 miles...."interesting" no ?!!

Currently awaiting teardown and replacement parts

My 16 R was actually a little bit low on oil from the dealer when I picked it up new. I brought it up to the correct level in the eyeglass but did actually burn a tiny bit during the first 600 miles. Once I did the first oil change (Motul V300) it's been ok.

this one i'd agree....

2015 R - i found while being somewhat gentle with the throttle, and a lower hash mark oil level, you could prevent any oil from dribbling out of the air box drain tube (item 7) (still gets in the air box, just not enough to drain) - use the throttle and tach as you really want to (shift lights blazing, bumps off the rev limiter now and then, with a sweeping use of the tach from down low to up high) and no matter what low oil level you have, oil will get sucked up and out thru the crankcase breather, then when parked on the side stand, the oil will migrate to the drain in the corner of the air box and dribble out the drain tube under the bike - use a middle window or upper hash mark oil level, and there will be oil everywhere (rear tire included)

the first occurrence was at around 2500 miles..my shop replaced both pistons, rings & cylinder sleeves at the 6500mile mark last season (Oct 2015) the tech pointed out how the pistons themselves were not exactly perfectly round...DNA requested all kinds of measurements and approved replacement

fast forward to the 8500 mile mark and it is happening again...at 11k+ miles its back at the dealer.....DNA came to look themselves this time, and found my bike, and another with the same issue, waiting for them

my service tech stands by his measurements and reiterated that "things just aren't as round as they are supposed to be"...they should be replacing everything all over again soon (Nov 2016)...

i'm looking for a way to have a small catch bottle set up, but there isn't much real estate...
RD16RR the exact same thing happened to me and the other bike (15 R) might be mine. My dealer after much testing and coordinating with Ducati put in new piston rings, piston sleeves, pistons, and a few other parts. Actually getting it back soon and have also heard oil level should not be too high i.e. above the half mark on the crank case or a substantial amount of oil could go into the air box. I hoping this fixes the small leak of oil I had but I see you have dealt with this a couple of times. We'll see how it goes.

...thats right...i'm in Round-2 right now....it seems DucatiNA regional rep stopped at the dealer, inspected and approved new rings (only)...i hope it solves it...my dealership has had 3 or 4 bikes (R's only) with the same issue - i'm also installing a catch bottle this time, as the oil was finding its way to the back tire.....
