Hey guys, just picked up my first Ducati v4 yesterday used with 3k miles. Had a question/concern

At a stop while letting go of the clutch the bike seems very laggy, and almost like it’s going to stall I’m not too sure what that is buts it’s pretty odd IMO. I’ve only owned Japanese bikes in the past so not sure if this is normal, any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

This is pretty common. Look up "delete evap canister" It seems that the charcoal filter that collects overflow gas gets saturated and clogs airflow causing stalls. A lot of people take that filter off, there are how-to vidoes. Not overfilling the gas tank is a quick fix.

Hmmm, my gas tank is almost empty right now lol

It could be just needing to get used to the Ducati clutch. They are not like other brands and it often takes a few days to get the feel. I would say do a few rides on it if you haven’t already, then decide if you still think it is a issue.

also is it normal for idle to surge up and down 500rpm on cold start? Currently 45 degrees out, once warmed up it seems to settle.

It’s a bit different than a Japanese bike so may be you just need to get used to riding it. Some surging when cold isn’t abnormal. I would suggest getting a tune, it helps clear up some common items like randomly stalling when coming to a stop.

Thanks guys for the input I had a bit more time with it today, the “laggy clutch” I was feeling seems to be because the throttle has a bit of a gap/play in it which was throwing me off.
probably do need an upmap do you have any recommendations on what I should get?

The infamous ...... Ducati throttle slop!

Get a new throttle tube from JetPrime, takes all the slop out and is more robust than the notorious ducati spacers

Motorcycleraceparts.co.uk are stockists.

You might also be noticing when the rear cylinders shut off at stops to keep the temperatures down ( for the rider) This makes it feel a little weird when you go to take off. I personally would like to disable this feature.

Doesn't this only happen if you're in neutral?

Beat the ball bag out of it and let her sing.
Adjust the clutch lever and repeat.

Was definitely the space in the throttle that was just confusing me, that being said I’ll probably never get a jap bike again. I didn’t realize how much better the ducati is to ride than any other bike, so smooth and powerful absolutely love it.
thanks guys for all the responses it helped me much !

+1 Ya do this! The throttle slop is too much. The "Ducati spacers" is a DIY fix. You open the throttle tube on your bars and add little silicon spacers. Bingo - no more extra play. A few of us did it with shrink insulation tubes instead of paying $30 for 2 tiny rubber bands.

check this for DIY fix,

I was at my dealer the other day who sells many different brands of bikes. Its interesting that some manufacturers have no throttle play and others do. Probably just a different design philosophy.

For accuracy, the spacers aren't rubber bands. They are injection molded plastic.

I had bad luck with those throttle spacers…they mess with the throttle position sensor which in turn caused blip shifter problems….better to replace the whole assembly with either the motomillion reworked assembly or a Domino quick turn throttle assembly
