Recently did my second oil change on my sfv4s that I have had about a year now. I put 3k miles on it. I found these hat look like smashed ball bearings and some small shards in the oil on the magnetic plug. I tore apart the motor sofar and found nothing out of the ordinary. I even scoped the inside to see all the gears and found no bearings that were wobbly or loose. I don't want to ride this thing until I know exactly what caused it.
What is your take?

The good news is that ball bearings are extremely difficult to smash so its highly likely to be more Ducati running in detritus, I am amazed at how much crap these engines can produce. Still, I would get those fragments under a microscope and check to see if indeed they are spherical, not saying everything is fine but my V4 has had several fully loaded magnetic plugs at oil change time.

So are you saying this is most likely just excess machine waste working its way out of the engine and that it should be fine?

I'd be definitely pulling that sump as a couple of those bits do look like machined parts. Did you strain the oil that came out? I always drain my oil on all bikes through a sieve for this reason. Once found a gear tooth and shift fork parts (not on the magnet) on my track bike prior to doing a Phillip Island trip (S1000RR). Nothing wrong with the bike at previous outing. Possibly saved a whole heap of headaches.

I have not strained the oil just yet. But I have it sitting waiting for me.
